restaurant attire at Caneel?
 

I need reminding, please. Do people (men and women both) wear shorts to dinner at the Equator? Is jacket for men needed at the "good" restaurant? (This is before high season.) Thanks! (DH doesn't want to bring jacket.)
Btw, has the Equator gotten any better, I wonder. We thought it was fairly mediocore. (Would taxi into town, but will be spending some days at Gallows, so will eat in Cruz Bay then.)

Just back last month - - - Equator was VERY mediocre - - - that "fake fancy" type of food that is a total ripoff. Only ate there twice in 10 days. We loved the buffets at breakfast and lunch, and ate a light dinner in the small restaurant near the bar nearly every other night.

We, too, tended to eat dinner at that little bar/restaurant. Not very atmospheric, but food not bad. Those buffets always look inviting-- and we've had them a couple of times-- but just don't want to spend that kind of $$ for breakfast or lunch (esp since we tend not to eat a whole lot). I do wish the Equator were better-- we've never enjoyed the food at all.
(I didn't check website about dress because it's not always accurate. I've found that what visitors report gives a better picture of what's what.)

Capacity was hovering near 40% when we were there in late October. The dress code didn't seem to be too rigid; they were simply happy to have people occupying some of the chairs. I did not wear shorts, but I did see several guests wearing them at dinner; definitely no jackets. Frankly, one meal at the Equator is enough. It is just not worth it.

schrink-- I do hope that you registered your opinion of Equator with the appropriate "powers." We do, each time, (politely, of course), and I always hope that if enough people make clear how disappointing the food is that perhaps something will change. Alas, hasn't seemed to make much difference.
We love Caneel, but they truly do "make it" on the setting, not the various other aspects of what people hope to find when spending that kind of money.

There are very few restaurants that require jackets left in the caribbean. And if I find one, I will keep walking right on by. I don't even pack long pants anymore, and have eaten at many very upscale restaurants. Nice Khaki shorts with a nice collared shirt should be fine just about anywhere. Jackets are for cold weather...period.

I half agree with Scott - no way is my husband packing a jacket to visit the Caribbean but do we tend to visit in summer.

We have been to two resorts that make a big deal on their websites about the correct dress for Dinner.

At Jamaica Inn there were men wearing sneakers with their slacks and shirts - nothing was mentioned.

At Nisbet Plantation on Nevis we saw people wearing jeans and one man slipped his sandals off and sat barefoot the whole meal - not what I wanted to look at.

As I said we go in low season so I think they appreciate the business and don't make an issue out of the dress code - Works for us!
