Rental Car in Tortola?
We read in our tour book that we should not rent a car in Tortola as the roads are bad and driving is on the left. Any experiences to help us decide? Seems this would offer more flexibilty than a scheduled tour. Thanks in advance

We rented a car in Tortola and had no problems. We had previously rented on other islands where driving is on the left.
There are lots of steep hills and sharp curves, but the roads are generally in good condition. Many drivers honk when they are approaching the crest of a hill or a blind curve. If you go to Smuggler's Cove (which I recommend) you'll need a vehicle with good ground clearance. A 4WD is not strictly necessary but it helps on steep stretches after a rain. |
Denzil Clyne is a friendly and reputable man who rents good quality vehicles at reasonable prices on Tortola.
cdt's assessment of driving there is a good one. Be EXTREMELY careful driving at night or in the rain as some of the hills and switchbacks are wicked and lots of water and rocks can wash down during heavy rains. |
Thanks to both of you. I guess we'll go ahead then. Diana, do you have contact info for Mr. Clyne so we can reserve prior to arriving - is he in Road Town? Last question - do we need an international drivers license or will US do? Appreciate the help!

Please rent a car - you'll be so glad you did. The views from this island are spectacular. Two years ago we rented from Hertz (I think)Had to take a taxi from the airport into Road Town to get the car - it cost us $18.00 to go a few miles. They were in the process of building a larger airport and hopefully now have on-site car rental. The roads are fine - just be careful on the sharp curves.

Here ya go:
http://www.islandsonline.com/denzil/ They brought the car to us at our hotel for no charge and dropped us off in Road Town to catch the ferry. If you do need an addit'l driver's license, the charge is minimal. Have a great time! |
