rental car in Anguilla
Perhaps the Anguilla regulars can help us with their recommendations. We are planning to rent a car for our week's vacation in Anguilla. Is it necessary to rent an air conditioned vehicle ? Or would a soft top/convertible be preferable. Should we take the extra insurance? We've not been to the island before so are unsure what the local driving conditions hold in storefor us.

If you don't already know driving is on the left side of the road, and of course there are the roundabouts.
I vacationed there in early December 2004 and we rented a car thru our hotel once we arrived. My husband did all the driving and things worked out very well.

Driving is very easy on Anguilla. We rented a car from a local guy, can't remember his name. We went to his house and in his back yard were 3 or 4 cars (chickens running around). We rented from him and left the car at the ferry dock with the keys in the ignition. The whole scene worried me but it all turned out fine. Anguilla is an awesome island and is very easy to navigate by car. No worries....maybe take a look at tripadvisor.com. If you go, eat at Zara's...what a wonderful experience with the singing chef!!!!

We use Avis & if you book online from the States before you go, it's among the cheapest on the island. They will bring the car to you where you are staying (as will the others) & you have to purchase an Anguillian driver's license for $20. I would get the a/c -- it's hot there; very little shade or rain. The roads are mostly paved at this point and except for the left side driving, it's pretty easy. Go to www.anguillaguide.com and order a map (free) -- it has all the roads, resorts, restaurants & beaches.

I also rented from Avis and had no issues. I can't recall if we had a/c... but I would recommend it. We didn't get extra insurance. We were insured through our own car insurance. It was easy to get around the island.

We also used Avis. But in terms of sightseeing you only need a carv for a day to visit the other hotels and the town as it is. For dinner I took taxis though costly it was just more convenient and did not cost as much as a daily rental.
