hi there, we leave in 2 days for St. John, don't know whether to rent a car for a day, a week, not at all, opinions? i realize availability will be limited at this point but i could call tomorrow or just wait until we get there.

We always rent for the entire stay(we rent on STT and use the car ferry)--there are so many great beaches and beautiful drives(esp the North Shore) that we like to be mobile. If its a day that we choose to veg at the hotel, we still use the jeep to go into town for dinner. Good Luck !!

Pecugl...can you let us know how your trip went when you're back? We're going in 5 weeks...Can't wait!
Fyi, after posting some info request on this site, everyone who responded said we should definitely rent. Main reason: so many beaches to see and going back and forth with a taxi is just not economical. We'll be there for a week and decided to rent for 4 days. By the way, Hertz only rents jeeps..and the hotel we're staying (the Westin) also only does jeeps...so not sure if that means CAR rentals are hard to come by on St. John. Just fyi.
Have a great time!

Suggest you opt for something with 4 wheel drive if you rent. If the roads get wet at all you will need it.

Yes rent a car. We rented from a local guy in town.He has an ice cream shop in town also.It wasnt the best but it was fine for us.Pack a cooler and head out to the many beaches. The Westin is great but there are so many beaches to see .Some are practically secluded.Solomon and Honeymoon are incredible. You need to walk thruogh the nature preseve to get to them.We did it with our 5 year old so it isnt to diffiucult.Hawksnest is our favorite. It is a beautiful little cove.Have a great time.By the way we rented when we got there.
