Registration is coming

Obviously this will be a popular change for many but for personal reasons I will not be registering. Too bad because I did enjoy helping people out. I guess I'll migrate permanently to www.traveltalkonline.com. This is a well-moderated board, but does not require registration (or at least not yet).

I agree with you curiousx.

I've been a regular poster under the same name on this board for a very long time trying to help folks out, but I will not be registering either.

I guess as soon as it's effective I will be seeing you over on traveltalkonline.com.

Doesn't matter if you want to register or not...you can't, there's a Cold Fusion error on the registration page....

Curious though - why not register? Anyone can get a freebie e-mail account to use, you don't have to give up your anonymity....it just makes it harder for people to use multiple aliases and prevents people from impersonating other posters - that's been a big problem here IMO.

what is all the fuss about? Your email address will NOT be displayed. Your screen name does not even have to be your real name. I use another forum ( Holiday Truths) where you have to register and there is NO problem with nasty posts. It is also well moderated mind you. Nancy, I'm surprised at your views. You have had several nasty replies to your posts. I would be interested to hear your reasons.

Really Liza? That's not a bad idea.
My main problem with it is the "Big Brother" aspect. I don't want someone e-mailing me and telling me that I can't post something or "warning" me about the content of my posts - huh uh, no way.
(Plus, some of the troll posts are so very entertaining

I LOVE the idea of registration and want to THANK Fodors for listening.

Some of you might know that I have been cyberstalked by someone from this board and continue to get viruses sent to my website (we have an excellent anti-virus program) and even recently started getting hang up phone calls.

This board is a travel talk site, not a place for rude, nasty, mean or abusive posts. There are tons of sites on the net that are more appropriate for that kind of posting and the trolls will go there and leave here, which is great.

THANK YOU Fodors this is GREAT news.

Bye bye old friends - sigh.
I'm really going to miss some of you.
(Even some of the people I've been in arguments with. Sometimes points were made that made me change my views about something.)
There are a lot of people who post and genuinely want to help people.
Maybe this is just what I need to get off my %^& and start a company whereby I can parlay my knowledge of Caribbean travel into something "paid" instead of all the freebie info dispensed.
I don't know when this is going to take effect, so I guess those of us who don't want to register can enjoy our last days of posting while they last.
It's been great y'all.

Normally I use my real e-mail address and have never had a major problem. Often people will e-mail me questions...I don't understand why people are afraid to use their real e-mail address unless they are going to slam people...which does happen Will i register...I'm sure.. this board has been extremely helpful to me.

OH DUH I feel like an idiot. I see it now. Sorry--oops. Well I will also not be bothering much anymore. The stucture will take away the fun, and sometimes not so fun, of the posts, replies, etc. I have enjoyed this site, and I have recieved some excellent help. I thank all who have helped me with my travel decisions and info.

I, too, have been a regular on this bb and have given out tons of info but will not register. My reasons are that when I have in the past the list of registered people are then sold to the spammers! No thank you! So many of the other bb's have gone under and so may Fodor's.

Tweedy by now you should have been able to find out who your 'stalker' is. It is not a hard process to track down people who violate the cyber rules as they leave 'finger prints' wherever they go. I would suggest you refrain from this bb and the Bahamas bb's that you frequent as even if you change your user name your responses are always the same (GOOD advice usually so I am not slamming you) and you are easy to identify.

CuriousX and Nancy,

Will miss you guys. I've been an advocate for registering ever since a particularly miserable obscenity-laden thread from last summer -- usual stuff, Jamaica-pro versus Jamaica-nay -- and I think this will raise the level of discourse dramatically.

Nancy, I agree with you on the laugh an occasional troll thread gets, but I think that's a reasonable price for the civility the board should attain.

Yes we were able to trace the jerk sending viruses and were able to get him kicked off AOL, Verizon and Earthlink.

It is really a sad to find someone who enjoys making others miserable. I am sure I am not the only person stalked, but he took it to a different level.

I only give out information when asked and since I have been all over the carribean, I have quite a bit of first hand info.

We all have our favorite places on this site and I appreciate the fact that we all have different opinions, that is what makes this board interesting. It should not be used to abuse posters.

Yeah, Jam_Man, I guess you're right.
I've been in a few that got ugly myself and let it get the better of me.
It's apparently too much to ask for people to monitor themselves and not use the boards for cheap therapy.
Over on the US board, someone said "get ready for the same boring questions over and over again" and someone else said the structure would be inhibiting to the free exchange of info.
I just don't want to feel monitored and overseen.
I've enjoyed giving info I felt was helpful on a topic I am comfortable with, but I've got enough "structure" in my life thanks

I agree it should not ever be used by others to cause trouble. It is an invasion of your privacy. I think it has good points, but it also has some bad points. I just don't think it will be as funny, as it use to be. Also frommers is extremely boring and they require registration. Look how dull it has become.

"My main problem with it is the "Big Brother" aspect. I don't want someone e-mailing me and telling me that I can't post something or "warning" me about the content of my posts - huh uh, no way."

I don't see that happening more than now...they can already see your IP address here and posts are already deleted of the mods don't like them.

If you just get a hotmail account or whatever, you need not ever check it for email once you're registered so if you do get spam, it will go unread.

Second, they say they aren't selling or displaying email addresses unless you want, so I suppose you could use your "main" one...but if you are suspcious, get a freebie.

There's only one board I ever visit besides this one that's not registration-required-to-post and it's HEAVILY moderated...too heavily, IMO.

I don't know what software they'll use here but boards that allow or require registration usually have other good features - ability to jump to posts new since you last visited, exchange private messages without e-mail, post photos, etc. They also seem to develop more of a community feel since you come to know regular posters.

Nancy - I just read your post! I'm so disapointed that you won't be posting anymore. I REALLY hope you will change your mind and considering getting a hotmail or a yahoo account and come back. I think you are a tremendous asset to this board and, on a selfish note, I had always planned to ask you about Nevis when I finally got the time and money together to visit! Please stay!!
