real fun in negril
 

My girlfriend and I are planning on going to Negril in July. I've been before but I went with my friend who was in absolute culture shock and was afraid of all the locals(he thought they were going to rob us and hack us up). We bought pot from some locals last time and plan on doing it again, but i want to know if anyone knows how to go on a plantation tour. Thanks!

You do know that buying pot is illegal and does carry jail time in Jamaica.
And you do know that Jamaican jails aren't even decent for human occupation, right?
And you do know that if you're caugt buying drugs in Jamaica you WILL be prosecuted and may just end up in one of those jails, right?

No doubt irish knows that pot is illegal and doesn't need a lecture. If s/he chooses to indulge, it is none of our business, but admittedly it would be wiser not to proclaim one's intentions of doing so on a public site.

irish, try doing a search here at Fodor's for "plantation" and see if anything comes up. Both Solomon Kerr and Talk of the Town Tours are always highly recommended on this board and contact information is here as well. You might want to also do a search for Tivertonhouse who has provided a wealth of information about Jamaica to us Fodorites.

Maybe h/she means a tour of a pot farm?

Ganja farm/aka plantation tours are
available on a qt/hush-hush basis on island and best only through a tour
guide company like those mentioned above IF they'll even consider the request. But it doesn't hurt to ask.
At worst, Sienna at Talk of the Town Tours or Carolyn Barrett at Barrettadventures will just smile and gently say no...
As 2 solo females not well
versed in the lay, laws and customs of the country, you'll put yourself at more
considerable risks to your person by
going off with some unknown guys off the beach or in=town. Resist the urge.

Whoops! The subtext of "plantation tour" was completely lost on me. I'll be sure to file away that little piece of info.

Agree with Tiverton. That's how tourists usually get hurt: when they do silly things like going back a bush with some dodgy fellows who just want to show them a good time!

While recently researching a trip to Negril I was suprized to find "special" plantation tours offered on the web quite openly-
usually on the tours section of small quirky hotels

While you may have found advertised *tours*...that does not diminish your risk for breaking Jamaican law. I would heed the wise advice of Tiv and JA girl.

If you are interested in private purchase, that's quite a different story.

But I would urge you to be cautious...and I say this with respect :-)
