Rain Forest- what to bring?
 

Going to Grenada for the first time in April and we hope to hire a guide to show us the island and give us a tour of the rain forest. What should we wear (shoes & other)and bring? Also, any recommendations for guides?

Wear a raincoat and rain over shoes and bring an umbrella.

Wear sturdy hiking boots and lots of bug spray! If going on overnight hike, bring long pant and longsleeve shirt. We went on hike in Costa Rica and hired a guide through a company called Iguana tours, check the web for guides.

If you are hiking in the Grand Etang area, which has a well-tended trail, you need bring nothing sturdier than Tevas -- which offer great fit, great traction and can be rinsed off. Mostly, what you will encounter is ankle-deep mud. (Most other guided hike will be similar). <BR> <BR>Wear clothing that you don't mind getting wet or smeared with mud -- e.g. nylon shorts and a t-shirt. It is cooler in the rain forest than on the coast, so going sleeveless may leave you shivering. Bug repellent is a good idea. Bring a camera, of course. A water bottle is nice to have as well. Pack it all in a backpack. <BR> <BR>I have used Caribbean Horizons for a tour in Grenada; they were wonderful. I've heard that Jeep Adventure Tours is also good. I second Eva's advice regarding clothing. You really need nothing special, but you will get dirty. Keep in mind that the trail going up Mt. Qua Qua is steep and slippery in places, so good traction is a must. It's also a good idea to bring some water and food if you're going on a long hike. I've gone several times in March and saw very few bugs, so I don't even bother with the insect repellent. <BR> <BR>In the past, I used Arnold's Tours for a hiking trip from Grand Etang to Concord Falls. The trip lasts 5-6 hours. They will pick you up at your hotel, transport you to Grand Etang Lake, and hike along with you to Concord Falls, where a van will be waiting to take you back to your hotel. The cost was around US$45 per person and included lunch along the trail. The guides carried the water and food.
