Quiet & Inexpensive Place to Stay
 

Hi,

I won a trip to the Atlantis--not a quiet place--and my wife and I are staying 4 extra days. Does anyone know of a quiet, inexpensive (and ideally somewhat remote) place to stay either on New Providence or Andros (or nearby)? Thanks!

You can't do better than the Nassau Beach Hotel -- check the rates on Expedia, they're like $80 a night and less per room. It ain't luxury but it's a quiet place with a nice beach, restaurants in walking distance, the bus to town right outside the door. Read reviews -- Lord knows people have had their problems with the place but those are the folks who expect five star treatment at a 2 1/2 star resort. So what if you're 3 people and they leave you 1 towel! Call 'em up, get more towels. A/C doesn't work right? Call 'em up or switch rooms. It's simple, and fun!

I have stayed at the NBH at least a dozen times in my life and when I go back to Nassau, that's the place. It's small, it's cozy, it's clean, it's unpretentious and it's cheap.

The July issue of Caribbean Travel & Life has a one page article on lower-end hotels and inns on New Providence. The hotels they listed are Towne Hotel, Dillet's Guest House, Nassau Beach Hotel, anad Nettie's Place Casuarinas of Cable Beach. The photos looked nice, but you wouldn't expect anything else in a travel mag, I suppose.

About 6 weeks ago I returned from a fabulous trip to Compass Point on New Providence. Rooms are comfortable and unique, atmosphere is laid back, service was terrific and food was great. We had all kinds of plans to go exploring but ended up spending 80% of our time on the grounds. It was quiet and serene....they had recently assigned new management (not technically sold but leased? or something like that)...no need to be concerned, everyone seems to take great care that you have a good time.

I second the Nass.Beach Hotel. Not luxury, but clean & cheap & QUIET. :)

We have stayed at Compass Point 3 times but have seen several really bad reviews since the property was sold by Chris Blackwell. Most of the comments said the service was poor, the place had fallen into disrepair and that the staffing was inadequate. All of those comments run contrary to our experiences.
Can you provide any more details on your recent visit?

The occasion for our visit was the reunion of 5 women who went to high school together 20 years ago! None of us had ever been to Compass Point before this, so I can't compare what it may have been to what it is now.

However, we needed/demanded a lot of attention. I'd like to think it was not in a superior "serve me" sense...just silly things we'd forgotten, needed guidance on (ie. best beach on the island? which Poop Deck to go to? dependable cabbies etc.) ...and of course, locking ourselves out regularly. The bar staff was friendly, attentive and funny. Leonard, who seemed to be everywhere all the time, was indispensable for all the "little things". Food was terrific and service was prompt and deferential. The rooms by their nature have a rustic quality - but I did not see any signs of disrepair (we had 3 rooms). They were clean, comfortable and well equipped (we loved our "outdoor kitchen" under our 2 bedroom hut!). We caught the #10 bus to town to buy fruit, cheese and wine for our "kitchen", and borrowed whatever we needed (corkscrew for one) from the bar.
I've travelled quite a bit - business and personal. The service was perhaps the best I've had in the Caribbean....the rooms suited us to a T....and the atmosphere was great for 5 women intent on relaxing and reconnecting. It gets a "highly recommend" from me on all counts.
