Question about Night Dives
 

On a recent vacation, we did a night dive. There were 7 certified divers and 1 dive master. 2 of the divers ended up getting lost... it was a very scary experience. On other vacations and other night dives I have done, there has always been at least 2 dive masters; one at the front and one bringing up the rear. Just wondering if you thought that was more the norm or if having a single dive master was more common. Thanks!

I've personally always heard of two here where I live, but not sure if that is the norm everywhere else.

any other input?? I'm curious about the dive master, diver ratio on open water dives...
I should add that all were open water certified... I was the only advanced.

TTT- I realize I posted this over a year ago... I've just always wondered about this. It was my mom and brother that ended up getting lost. The current changed quickly and they were "lost" in a shipping channel. Very scary indeed!!!!!

So re: night dives- 1 diver master or two???

Gone on two night dives in St. John. The first we had 10 - 12 divers and two dive masters. The second we had 5 divers and 1 dive master. On both dives we given instructions to keep everyone in sight and to not lag behind. I'm not sure what happend with your mom & brother but are groups were always pretty close to each other.

In the middle of our dive, there was a big current change. Visibility dropped to less than 10 feet. The dive master turned around and "assumed" everyone was following. Mom and bro didn't see him turn. They should have been paying attention... BUT this was a larger group (12-14 divers) and I still think it's odd that there was only 1 divemaster.

With that large a group they should have had a "trailer".

I know my hubby always dives with 2 DM on night dives. You should also try posting this Scubaboard.com. There is a wealth of knowledge on there.
