Puerto Rico September 1st - SHOULD I GO?!
 

Hi folks - 5 friends are headed to PR San Juan and vieques for 5 days Sept 1-6 - it's all hurricane season right now w/ storms n what not - do other ppl have trips planned to PR - what's the verdict? - go or not to go?

The storm Ireneslashed directly across Puerto Rico, tearing up trees and knocking out power to more than a million people, then headed out to sea north of the Dominican Republic, where the powerful storm's outer bands were buffeting the north coast with dangerous sea surge and downpours.

Late Monday, the storm's downpours forced more than 1,000 Dominicans to evacuate their homes, with some families in low-lying areas fleeing to churches and public buildings. Others hunkered down inside their homes as the winds howled outside and heavy waves pounded the piers and washed onto coastal boulevards.

true true i been following Irene...but what are the chances it will all clear up by spetember 1st im wondering - we did take travel insurance luckily so i can cancel the trip. Just wondering when to make the call - I'm from Cali - so I don't know the aftermaths of hurricanes and such...this one sounds bad...so wondering even if by September 1 it's cleared up, will the after effects be bad.

Any updates on the OP's question? I'm curious too...how will the resorts fair in the aftermath a week and a half later? I mean the odds of another one hitting so soon seems slim, but will everything still be torn up or do the resorts recover pretty quickly?

travel04, be sure to read your trip insurance policy very carefully. Oftentimes, you can only cancel your trip (and be paid your claim) if your providers cancel -- i.e. flights cancelled and hotel cancelled. Most policies don't let you make the decision unilaterally.

If your flights haven't been cancelled and your hotels haven't closed, you can probably take your trip with some confidence. The effects of hurricanes tend to be very localized, and on islands dependent on tourism, they work quickly to open back up for business. Having ridden out a hurricane in the BVI (a Cat 3 storm), we found things OK after the storm -- there were still the odd sites without power (though most have generators), some shortages of supplies, and a dearth of visitors. But September is low season anyway, so there usually aren't a lot of people around under normal circumstances. But the businesses were very welcoming to those of us who did come.

Callaloo, thanks for the update! Seriously considering a last minute trip to Puerto Rico...mostly because my passport is expired and I need to get away! Yikes! We have a trip planned to Spain and Morocco in May so I'd better get a move on that!

Hi Callaloo thanks! Expedia is refusing to give us a full refund as they say that the insurance is only for death and injury when i know the rep on the phone promised i could cancel due to bad weather - i am working with Expedia to pull up the call records.

YOur date is a week away. Things will have calmed down by then.

well the girls in the group also felt there would be debris post hurricane and this and that and well our caving adventure group said they will not open for those dates as there have been a lot of mudslides....soo...we decided to cancel and i got the full refund from expedia. Oh and our BioBay adventure tour company said he the tour would be still on and we would have to just see how it turned out - figured if im getting the full refund back didn't want to risk it. Forecast shows showers almost every day through labor day weekend.
