I live in PR. I've lived there most of my life, with the exception of 3 years spent in OH. Let me answer your questions. If you plan on hanging out in the public housing projects, if you owe money to a drug dealer, are a crackhead or a "lady of the night", or if you plan on waklking down dark alleys at 1am by yourself, then I would have to say PR is quite dangerous. If you use "common sense", like it's been said before on this thread then you will be fine. Obviously Traveler 863 has a grudge with our lovely island, why else would he so adamantly try to persuade you to go somewhere else.

PR has a lot to offer to everyone. If you like great nightlife, bars, pubs, etc. then check out San Juan. If you don't, go to Vieques, Culebra or any of the other great small towns outside of the greater SJ area.

Trust me, it's not like you're going to walk outside your hotel room, and you're gonna get mugged and grandma is going to be the victim of a drive-by. Believing that, would be "ignorant and foolish" as some ignorant fool said before.

PR is a populous island, yes. But, most of it is concentrated in the SJ area. Therefore, commonsense would suggest going to a different part of the island if you want "peace and quiet".

If you want to go somewhere in the caribbean where there are excellent services for tourists, great culture and history, then go to PR. If you want to go somewhere where you can explore a 400 year old spanish fort and the US's ONLY rainforest... on the same day, go to PR. If you want peace and relaxation during the day and crazy parties at night, go to PR. If you want to go somewhere where English is spoken and as an added advantage, no passport is needed, then you guessed it, PR. Whatever your vacation goals and dreams are, you can do it here. I guarantee it.

Traveler863,

The article on the link you provided just proves my point. The vast majority of crime is DRUG-RELATED. Perhaps you should stick to writing on DC travel threads; at least that's something you know about. I know about Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico has anything, that anybody, could possibly want in a caribbean destination. Just do your homework, or ask someone that really knows what they're talking about.

And THAT is a clear cut, responsible answer to the original poster.
