Price of groceries in Cayman
Several posts have mentioned how pricey Grand Cayman is. We have rented a condo which, frankly, seemed pretty reasonable and has had good reviews from this site (Anchorage). We will eat out a few times, but most of the time we will probably eat at the condo. How would you guess groceries compare to a midwest city (Kansas City, for example)? I found a site showing prices for Bermuda. Definitely out of sight. Just want to go prepared. Thanks.

The prices are indeed higher, but nothing that will break the bank. Just plan on spending anywhere from 10-25% more on groceries, and you'll be fine. The grocery stores there are very updated, and you'll find them comparable to the states for selection. The two things that make Cayman expensive is the exchange rate of $1US dollar = $.80 cents GC, and the price of drinks at the bars. Just remember that you are on vacation, bring a couple extra bucks, and relax & have fun. Vacation is always worth splurging a little extra $$. As long as you go down knowing it's going to be a bit pricey, the sticker shock won't hit you bewteen the eyes. We usually bring down a couple bottles of booze to help offset the bar prices. You are allowed 1 liter of spirits per adult. have fun!!

you should also consider bringing some things from the states. i just ret'd (stayed at the westin) and brought some snacks including cheese, meats, crackers along with a bottle of rum and a few bottles of wine. saved us a lot on the bar bill! we just cleared out the mini bar and put our stuff in there. you're permitted to bring in wine/alcohol. check GC sites for the amounts; although, our bags were never checked!
have a blast! i can't wait to go back!!

We always bring a cooler with some food when we travel because we stay 2 weeks and eating out all the time gets old. We have been to Cayman a few times and have brought food. Cayman is stricter than some of the other islands. All meats must be in their original packaging from the store. I think they are looking for USDA approval. We made the the mistake of bring some homemade sausage and meatballs and they were confiscated. We also pack some dry goods, rice, snack foods, etc.
