Please help,can't decide,Negril or St.John?
Just when I think I've decided on an island[St.John]I ruin it by checking into others. The only other place I keep thinking about is Negril.I guess I should desribe what we are looking for small adventure snorkeling, hiking, horseback riding, etc, some nightlife more intereseted in good music, food, drinks.Doesn't have to be expensive just good!Don't like crazy nightlife though.I live in Grayton,Seaside area in Fl.so want a beach that is maybe more lush[palms]Please help!

Two totally different venues! St. John is more like a country club atmosphere in my opinion, very pretty, pristine and "higher end". Negril is a wilder feel (wild in habitat, very third world, but awesome beaches and a nearby waterfall is out of this world). I've been to both - loved both - for different reasons. If you are adventerous and like to feel like you are in a different country with different customs, go to Negril, if you are a "safe" personality, and want something more like a planned vacation, go to St. Johns.

Wow, my two favorite places in the world, St. John vs. Negril, too close to call.
St. John is very, very quiet at night, great snorkeling, fantastic hiking (like the Rams Head trail), great views of BVI, cheap happy hour drinks in Cruz Bay. Many fantastic small beaches and bays. Easy day trips to the BVI or St. Thomas. St. John is all about beaches and beauty.
Negril is laid back yet exciting. Free live reggae beach parties at night. Jamaican culture, music and food. There are no hiking trials but 7 miles of beach to walk or ride bikes to the cliffs. Mainstream watersports like bannana boats, etc. Snorkeling is only average. Negril is more than just a fabulous beach, it's a hip experience.

Flgirl...Do you like nightlife? Negril will have way more nightlife than laid back St. John. Also, if you want the resort experience Negril will probably be a better buy than Caneel Bay Resort(expensive). St John is great if you love nature, snorkling & hiking and don't mind quiet evenings with smaller bars, a little live music, etc. Don't worry too much, remember you can always go to the other place next time!!

Negril was my first Caribbean experience and is still my favorite. I have been to Grand Cayman, Anguilla, St Marten and Barbados. Negril is the only one I have returned to - I just love the whole feel of the place. Really hard to describe because I liked all the other places too - Jamaica was just special. Took my daughter on my last trip and she is hooked too.

I live in NO & if you like that feel then Negril is probably the place for you to start. There are several B&B type places to stay & you can always hike around the falls on a tour. Try checking with Soloman Kerr at Talk of the Town Tours. He is very reasonable & highly recommended for tours. His website lists some of the tours but he will do a custom one for you if you ask. He has been very helpful with all my Negril questions. His website is www.talkofthetowntours.com
Have fun!

Okay,I think I finally decided[or at least my husband did]Although I definetly tend to lean toward the culture of Jamaica,we decided that this trip will be St.John, the great snorkeling is what eventually won out!Was concrned about no nightlife,so decidedto spend 2-3 nights in P.R.after that will probaly be partied out!You guy's are great and 100% sold Negril to me it WILL be my trip next year.Husband get's to choose this year as he is going to be camping out in the middle of Mexico to help build an orphanage. So,I guess R&R wins am very excited still it looks and sounds WONDERFUL!!!
