xyz99, I forgot all about going thru St Thomas. I'm not sure that would be more convinient than the PR, tortola, and ferrry to VG route. I don't think the ferry from St Thomas goes directly to VG and its a long ferry ride. Also if you get to St Thomas in the afternoon you may want to check if there is a ferry connection to get to VG the same day etc. If you have your mind set on VG that is great, (since we prefer it over Tortola) you will not be disappointed. It is very quaint with lots of charm etc...

We fly from BWI to SJ on American and change planes in SJ to American Eagle, it is normally a very short time between flights, maybe 60-90 min. and a short flight to Beef Island Tortola. Trellis Bay is a 2 min. walk from the airport and there are places to eat or drink there while you wait for the ferry, just a nice place to wait and have a drink, you put your bags on the pier and when the ferry comes they will load them up, someone at the airport will tag your bags for the North Sound express, they offer a cab ride to Trellis Bay which we did the first time but it's so close I think it took more time to load the luggage and drive there than to walk.VG is a beatiful island with great beaches that are sometimes deserted.

Thanks a lot for all this info – we had similar transfers last year going to St.John, and you are right, it was easy. VG seems very doable, I'm sure we're going to love it.

My 2 cents worth:
We've been to St. Johns twice and enjoyed both the Westin (The kids want the pool) and camping out at the National Park. (You woun't want to do that but we're trying to teach the kids something about "give-n-take"---I think it worked too!) Anyway, one year we went to Grenada. I really love the people there BUT it's a lot of work to even get there. Our 4 star hotel is in reality a 3 star at best. This is not a complaint at all because we did not mind at all---but many North Americans would object. Beaches were just o.k. and snorkeling was not good.
We've just posted a question on the Bahamas board--we're thinking the Abocos this year.

You've gotten great advice. I've finally caught a respite from the real world, so here's my two cents:

VG is a very nice island (honeymooned there). Like Nevis, it's a little more out of the way and not a commercial, cruise ship mecca. The Baths are wonderful, there are some other nice beaches and it's a great locale for a day sail or fishing trip. My wife and I rented motor scooters and had a blast bopping about part of the island.

In a late response to earlier posts on this thread, we just got back from St. Lucia (yes, ejcrowe, I promise a review!) and it truly is very lush and scenic. The people we experienced (and we went all over) were very nice and we never felt threatened - and we were travelling with 3 kids. We stayed at the Windjammer.
