Passports
Is a Canadian Passport really a necessity to travel to Puerto Plata? I have the other documentation required, but do not travel often and it seems a bit of an inconvinience to buy a couple of passports if they're not really required. I've heard both "yes" and "no" to my inquiries and am looking for the quickest and easiest way to travel to D.R.
Thanks.

According to the Canadian gov't website

http://voyage.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/destinations/menu_e.htm

a passport is required for the Dominican Republic.

In our experience a Canadian passport is invaluable. That said, we have been to DR for the last three years, and I know that fellow adult travellers had no problem with photo ID /Driver's License + Birth Certificate. This site would confirm this.
http://virgin.net/travel/guides/c_am...ortandvisa.htm
I inquired also and was told that Canadians and Americans do not need passports. Original birth certificates with raised seal and another form of picture ID.

Passport not required. Birth certificate with photo id required(e.g. driver's license) or even an old expired passport with your photo is a good second piece of ID.
