Passport needed?
 

I have read mixed information about whether or not a US passport is really needed to travel to St Lucia. Can anyone confirm this for me? Every website I have been to says that it is not neccessary, but recommended. I certinly dont want to run into any problems if we dont have one, but dont want to get one unless we truly need to.

Birth certificate with a raised seal or a birth abtract along with a photo ID (drivers license, gov't ID) is acceptable. A socical security card, BJ's/Sam's Club card is NOT considered acceptable photo ID. If you don't have a drivers license go to your local DMV and get a photo ID.

Passports are so much easier and only 1 piece of paper as opposed to carrying several forms of ID. The cost is minimal and saves lots of hassles. Each year they talk about people having to have Passports and especially now travel restrictions are even tighter so a Passport will be a good idea.

I agree. Passport - don't leave home without it. It may not be necessary but if you ever run into a problem you'll be glad to have it.

Anon is correct, you do not need a passport for St. Lucia. Haven't had any problems traveling without them thus far.

Drivers license is not acceptable. Get your passport

A passport is always preferred because if it becomes lost, it's much easier to obtain an emergency passport; you cannot get an emergency birth certificate. If you do not own a passport, then a govenment form of ID (drivers license, military ID, state ID) plus an original OR certified copy of your birth certificate will do.

Was there in July 2001. My husband was fine with drivers license and birth cert. issued by dept. of health with raised seal. A hospital one will not do. His is a wallet size, laminated one.

Regarding the license + birth certificate option: What if your name has changed (maybe more than once) between birth and the license? I guess in that case passport would be the only option?

Passport is always the best way to go. If there have been name changes you may have to bring every piece of paper to back it up. Why bother also the chances are greater of loosing the paperwork. Just get a passport.

If you're married, you will need your marriage certificate also due to the name change. I have always traveled without a passport but it would be so much easier as the other posters have said just to carry one document. How long does it take to get a passport processed, does anybody know off hand?

It takes 4-8 weeks to get a passport. It is faster if you live near one of the major cities which actually have real passport offices rather than going to a center (like the one in many large post offices) that process, mail but do not actually issue. It is also possible to get an emergency passport with confirmed travel plans - mailed within 48 hours of receipt of your documents - but it costs extra.

Just got back, NO you do not need a passport. Have a birth certificate from the state you were born in, not the hospital. That, with a drivers licence, will do it.

What about entry criteria for a toddler to the Bahamas? I don't have a passport for her, but will have her birth certificate. Does anyone know?

Jill, all you need to bring is her birth certificate. Did the same thing when we went to the Bahamas with our 11 and 14 year old girls. No problems encountered.

Passports are always acceptable, but birth certificates have to meet certain requirements (raised seal, etc.) So if you use a birth certificate, it's your responsibility to make sure the one you have meets their exact requirements.

LOL<BR><BR>Yes...a passport is the ideal solution.<BR><BR>No...you do not NEED a passport (which BTW was the question asked, thank you very much).<BR><BR>You WILL need a valid photo ID (driver's license will work for this) and valid proof of citizenship ( birth certificate WITH RAISED SEAL will work for this). A voter's registration card is no longer acceptable proof of citizenshiip in many places.<BR><BR>Now, distinction to be noted!!! Although everyone here who posted favoring the taking of a passport speaks truth that it makes the entry/reentry EASIER, you FAILED to answer the question asked. The poster did NOT ask for opinion.
