Passport for Nevis?
 

Do I need a passport to travel to Nevis? If not, what should I have?

Here's my story which I post periodically but it needs to be said: Four times, we have personally witnessed gate agents at airports deny boarding to people with raised seal birth certificates. In every instance, the people said that their travel agents told them or they knew that the country they were going to didn't require passports (undoubtably true). In every instance, they were NOT allowed to board -- 8 vacations ruined; much screaming & crying (2 of these times were pre-9/11; 2 after). I know people who have traveled successfully on the birth certificates but do you want to be someone at the mercy of a cranky gate agent at 6:00 am?? Just get the passport.

P.S. If something terrible happens when you're out of the country, do you want to be in the return line to get back in that's marked "No Passport"?

Right now you do not need a Passport to enter Nevis, just an original raised seal birth certificate and a government issued photo ID but this is subject to change between now and when you might be travelling. That said, I agree with the previous poster, in this day and age you'd be wise to get a passport. It makes international travel so much easier. They are not that expensive (about $80) and are good for 10 years (that's $8 per year - less than the cost of a few cans of beer). Do yourself a favor and get a passport.

Well, I'm just wondering if I have enough time. We leave in 3 weeks, and yesterday when my hubby went to get one, they took his birth certificate and told him two to three weeks. They did tell him he would have it in plenty of time, but what if he didn't get his passport OR his birth certificate in time? I guess I will bite the bullet and go today.

Fist hand experience here. I was denied boarding to Nevis at BWI two years ago because my birth certificate didn't have a raised seal. I was lucky in that I could drive a hundred miles or so and get a new birth certificate and fly the next day. You don't need a passport to get to Nevis but having one makes it easier than debating whether a seal is raised or not.

Thanks - I applied for one yesterday and expidited it. They said I would have it in time for my trip, so fingers crossed!!
