paranoid.....
Ok I KNOW this is completely insane but since this is a community....I need reassurance...we are leaving for St Thomas this Saturday and I'm very concern with all this "weather activity" in the tropics right now...just looking for comfort ;(

There's no storm activity anywhere near St. Thomas at this time and it doesn't look like anything is on the horizon for next week. You can go to the following web-sites to check for yourself:

TD#5 just formed off the coast of Africa. Right now it looks like it will track across the southern Windward Islands before turning northward across the Dominican Republic and Haiti by next weekend. Keep an eye on this one!

I don't think you are being paranoid at all, it is a valid concern!
We leave in 11 days. |
It's definitely un-nerving to watch the Weather Channel and see the parade of disturbances marching across the screen. However, your best bet is to just "go wid da flow." If there is a significant risk, your airline will cancel your flight and/or your hotel will cancel your reservation -- and you'll get either your money back or an opportunity to re-book. They are no more interested in putting you in harm's way than you are being in it. If you are truly worried, however, give your hotel a call before departure -- they may be willing to work with you.
Bear in mind, too, that it's virtually impossible to predict if and where a storm will strike. Even when it does, it tends to impact a very discrete area. If you are not hit directly, you're likely to suffer stinky weather for a day or two, and then it will be over. Good luck. |
I do not think you are paranoid, We also are leaving for a trip to Grand Cayman this weekend. Sunnyboy is correct that there is tropical depression #5(will be "emily" if classified as a hurricane). I am just going to follow the reports on stormcarib and weathercarib, that is all we can really do. Although, I must admit it is a bit scary. The projections that this would be a very active(and early) storm season are proving true. Best wishes to all us travelers and people/locals on all the islands this summer.Carol

Well....thank you for all your kind words...I have been keeping my eyes on this TD5 also and I hate it...I have booked a villa with Mclaughlin Anderson and fly AA from Montréal through Miami...I sure hope people from AA in Montréal will be able to tell me what the story is on Saturday Morning. I'm waiting 'til last minute and I keep looking at all the weather web site A_Traveller suggested, while my stomach is churning...we have trip insurance so...but the kids will be so disappointed...
