Cost of Food- Bahamas
I've read that both eating out and shopping at the grocery store are very expensive. Is this true? We're a young couple looking to get the most for our dollar. Is the DR a cheaper vacation location? Which location has the nicer beaches?? Thanks!!

Yes, for the most part, the bahamas is quite expensive. But there are ways around it. THere are also plenty of American Fast Food joints, as well as bahamian "takeway" shacks where you can get great food for just a few bucks. Or in Nassau, you can head to the Fish Fry at Arawak Cay and pick up a full bahamian dinner for $8-$14 bucks..
Here's a link to some of the restaurants in Nassau, and the menus.

Cabbage Beach has been named the 3rd best beach in the world.

Depends on where you go. We ended up a little of the main strip in town one night and I had pasta that was wonderful for $8. Just ask to look at menus before you go in. A lot of hotels will have menus that you can look at as well.

I'm assuming you're talking about Nassau? The Bahamas have over 700 islands. I'm leafing through my diary where I've listed inexpensive to moderate eateries throughout New Providence. Hit the Harbour Bay Shopping Center, and at Blue-Hill Rd. and the Mall at Marathon. There's a restaurant serving subs and salads for low prices. Don't forget Anthony?s Caribbean Grill on PI Village Shopping Center, on Casino Drive. HINT: they have Happy Hour free hot snacks that are good as a dinner. You can get dinners for just under $12, and the kids menu starts at just under $5. But, my wife and I went there to eat, sat at the bar for a few before, and the free hot snacks of conch fritters, hot dogs, deep fried fish, wedgies and pizza slices, etc., left us full. We left stuffed and paid only for the drinks. vour. Happy Hour is from 3-6 there. I also like Crocodile's Waterfront Bar and Grill on East Bay Street, a quarter mile west of the PI Bridge. A funky place with a thatch palm roof on the waterfront, but daily specials of deep Bahamian and American foods. Turn left on East Bay Street off the PI Bridge, and the Poop Deck offers great food at moderate prices. The Cheeky Monkey Restaurant & Beer Parlour on Charlotte Street, a short stroll off Bay Street is a great place to eat too, especially for lunch. Don't know about the dinners there. HINT: I had the grouper fingers there as an appetizer...very good! The Conch Fritters restaurant across from the British Colonial Hotel on West Bay St. is a great inexpensive eatery with high-quality food. HINT: the mac & cheese in the Bahamas is much different than what we're accustomed to in the states...it's three X's better. Order it there. There's also a Dairy Queen and Kentucky Fried Chicken, along with a McDonald's and Dunkin' Donut in the downtown area. The Sbarro's is great too on West Bay street, and offers Bahamian food for inexpensive prices. I always like the Green Shutters British Pub, a National Historic site and restaurant on Parliament Street, off Bay Street. Good draft beers and moderatley price dinners and lunches. HINT: try the steak and kidney pie if you want something different. Also, don't forget Arawak Cay on west Bay St.
Also, try Moja's Cafe opposite Saunders Beach; they have American meals but I actually tried the Sheep's Tongue sandwich...it was good. My wife wondered how I could eat something out of a sheep's mouth, then she order a fried egg sandwich for the breakfast...go figure. Another neat place is the Bonefish Bev Emporium on Charlotte st., off of Bay Street. Funky place with gourmet coffees, but the HINT is the snacks and bagel sandwiches there...better than Starbucks. Lastly, I always loved walking through Potter's cay under the PI bridge. The conch salad is superb. Have fun...hope this helps. Oh, Domino Pizza will deliver to your room at night. Robert
