Oyster Bay Beach Resort, St. Maarten???

My husband and I, 30ish, are thinking about staying at The Oyster Bay Beach Resort in St. Maarten in January 98. Anyone stay there recently? Pros and cons would be helpful. We like snorkeling, swimming, sightseeing, good food, relaxing and romance. Thanks for your anticipated comments. If you have any comments about other places to stay in St. Maarten we would welcome them also.

OYSTER POND AREA IS VERY REMOTE YOU WOULD HAVE TO TRAVEL A DISTANCE FOR RESTAURANTS SHOPPING, ETC. SEE MY RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION ABOUT CUPECOY BEACH CLUB. THE LOWLANDS AREA HAS LOTS OF SHOPPING, RESTAURANTS AND SOME GREAT BEACHES. RENTING A CONDO WITH A KITCHEN CAN SAVE YOU A LOT OF MONEY, EVEN IF YOU JUST MAKE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH, AND HAVE COLD DRINKS ON HAND. YOU CAN EVEN GET PIZZA (AVAILABLE IN THE ATLANTIS CASINO) FOR A CASUAL, INEXPENSIVE EVENING.

This resort was very pretty. The resort is directly on the beach and has pretty decks and terraces for dining, sipping cocktails, etc. My friend and I rented a car which is a must. You are a ways from other activities except for a seafood restaurant just over Oyster Pond (which is OK at best). (The resort is on a finger of land b/t the ocean and the pond.) We had a lot of fun exploring the island, but I was disappointed that there was still a lot of clean up left to do from a hurricane 4-5yrs. ago. The resort will offer privacy and romance. Oh- go to Bay Rouge on the French side - it was a gorgeous beach. I understand that the diving there is not good b/c there's not very much coral around this island. Also, when in the main cities at night, you get the feeling that crime definitely exists there. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions.

We stayed on the French side in St. Maarten at Grand Case Beach Club and loved it. We found St. Maarten
to be a very convenient island and the accommodations that we had at Grand Case was 2 floors....bedroom upstairs. Was not an expensive vacation and it even had cooking facilities. Short walk to town and it was lovely. Rented car and had a great time..Had the very best food by eating local in town.....would definitely go back..
