overnight nassau
flying to san salvador & must overnight on nassau on oct. 27 any suggestions on a clean, safe but inexpensive place to stay? we don't want to be to far from the airport, don't need to be beachfront but that would be nice, would prefer someplace we can walk to dinner. would like something around $100 a night if that's possible.
any thoughts |
Hi Virginia,
Ooh! Can't wait to hear all about San Salvador! Anyway, for Nassau, we did our layover lunches each way (to and from Long Island) at Compass Point. It's about 1 minute cab ride from the airport and is very cute. You would just eat at their restaurant. The price may be out of your budget though. www.compasspointbeachresort.com With that being said, my all time favorite restaurant -ever- is Graycliff, and they have rooms there too! It's right in the heart of town. You could take a 10 minute cab ride there from the airport and not need to leave. It's really beautiful, has the western hemisphere's largest wine cellar (ask for the tour!), a cigar bar, and just a ton of wonderful character. The links on the site aren't working for rates, so you could call to see. I would definitely recommend staying here if it's for one night and no kids. It's walking distance to the town's attractions too. www.graycliff.com/ http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...d_Bahamas.html |
Close to the airport (about 5 minute ride), clean, safe and inexpensive (if you are ok with basic) is Orange Hill Beach Inn (orangehill.com)- much less $$ than Compass Point. We stayed there twice on overnights to the out islands. I don't think I would swim in the sea there but the view of the beach/water is very pretty- great to just sit in an outdoor chair or swing, look at the view and know you are really on vacation! A little local restaurant called Traveler's Rest is just down the road but you would want to take a cab, I think (good conch salad and wonderful guava cake). I am also very anxious to hear what you have to say about San Salvador- where are you staying?

I second the Orange Hill Beach Inn, though it's been a while since I stayed there. It's very convenient to the airport and modestly priced. I liked NOT being in Nassau proper.
I had wanted to stay at Compass Point, but they had a 2-night minimum at the time (and it looks like they have a 3-night minimum now). Bummer; it looks really cute. |
Third vote for Orange Hill Beach Inn. Have not stayed there since 04 so maybe a Goggle search to see current reviews.

Another vote for Orange Hill. We last stayed there in 2008. There's a newer building, might be called 'a cottage' which is perfect for 2.
We ate a new Chinese restaurant less than half a mile away (turn right out of OH and walk along the main road to a small shopping precinct with a few stores (including a bottle shop). About half a mile to a mile in the opposite direction is a local restaurant with a sea view and eating outside there at sunset is popular. Compass Point is lovely but definitely above your budget. |
I posted an addition to my OBH response but it did not seem to go- not sure what happened. Anyway, what I said is the the first time we were there overnight we stayed in a room upstairs in the yellow poolside building facing the ocean and had a very nice view- the bathroom was very tiny but since we were just there on a quick overnight it was ok. On the return they had overbooked and upgraded us (we had just been there the week before) to a cottage. If you look at the photos showing two pink units with a lavender one to the left of the photo, we were in the pink unit in the middle (faces the ocean)- it was a much nicer and larger room with a better bath- on the rate sheet it is $20 more- think I would go for it!
Also, we were traveling to Eleuthera and wanted to travel with a soft sided rolling cooler with steaks, etc.- I contacted them ahead of time to see what we could work out and they very graciously put it in their walk-in freezer overnight. It worked out very well. I am not sure what the grocery situation is on SS but I just wanted to tell you that this was a big PLUS for us for OHB. |
