Over the Water Bungalows
 

I have seen nmany pictures of the South Pacific that the resorts have over the water bungalows. We would love to stay in one but the the South Pacific is to far of a flight from the east coast and more money then we would like to spend. I was wondering is there any place in the caribbean or in south america that offers these? I have heard of a resort called Anthonys Key resort in Honduras but the place seems a little to bare bones for us. Any other suggestions?

A couple of years ago I read that Rosewood Hotels & Resorts (owners of Caneel Bay, Little Dix Bay, Jumby Bay, etc.) were going to open a new resort in St. Lucia that would have over the water bungalows. I was really excited about this because I love the idea of the bungalows but don't want to make the plane trip to the South Pacific. I've not heard anymore about it since then, and I can't find anything about it on Rosewood's website. I'm assuming it fell through. Does anyone have any information about this?

My wife and I were in Tahiti two years ago, we did a cruise and also stayed in an over the water bungaloo, it was so worth it!! Check out sky auction for good deals, do a search for tahiti, also princess had a special for a 7 day cruise for an outside balcony for $900 a person for oct. 25, that week only..

One of the reasons you won't find overwater bungalows in the Caribbean is the lack of protection from swells.
The overwater bungalows in French Polynesia are unique because they are built inside protected atolls. The atolls buffer the resorts from the surrounding ocean and prevent/minimize damage during storms.
There really aren't any such areas in the Caribbean.
Periodically resorts have built the overwaters in the Caribbean, but often times the next hurricane destroys them. And the ones which I've seen in the past haven't been as memorable as those in the Bora Bora/Moorea resorts.

Check out Daniel's Head Village in Bermuda. It's an eco-resort that has some tented cottages over the water with glass floors for watching the marine life. I did not stay there but remember getting info about it a few years ago when it first opened. It seemed a little "bare bones" to us, too, but it may have changed since then.

Check Bocas/Boca del Toro, Caribbean coast of Panama, for the sole Tahitian-style over water bungalows outside the Pacific/Indian oceans. Conde Nast just did a story on it as well.

Daniels Head has changed, its closed, now an eyesore in Bermuda.

There are over the water bungalows at Melia Cayo Coco, in Cuba. They are over a pond of sorts though instead of the ocean so that they are protected, but then you don't get marine life stuff. YOu can look at the web site at solmeliacuba.com....The rooms are awsome though, and not "bare bones" at all.

There are incredible over the water bungalows in Port Antonio Jamaica called the Blue Lagoon Villas , Norse Point has its own site and is reasonable . Also on the Bay Islands off Honduras (Roatan) they have this style as well . Roatan is very beautiful . check out roatan net .com , and the Palmetto Bay Plantation web site , they say it is what the caribbean was 30 years ago . West Bay beach is amazing , tons of little resorts and villas . Faith
