MSQ, I think a grant for the pursuit of the GF is just and reasonable. Absolutely!
|
I have only seen one and it was two years ago when I was in Sanibel. It was grand to see!
|
I have seen the green flash too....once in BVI and once in Sanibel.
I do however see moonbows all the time where I live. It happens when the moon if full and there is a slight haze in the atmosphere. I have seena vibrant roy g biv around the moon a few times, and more faintly at other times. I also saw a rainbow around the sun...a complete circle....it was amazing. |
I just saw my first Green Flash last week!
Unfortunately it was not in a setting as ideal as the Caribbean. I was in my office on the 50th floor of our building in downtown Dallas. Looking west you can see forever and the topography is dead flat. It was an extremely clear evening. I watched closely for it as the sun set at about 7pm. Just as and after the sun dipped below the horizon there it was! A pinpoint green flash for a split second. My understanding from reading various webpages about the subject is that you need a clear sky and a low horizon, which is why have some elevation makes it easier. |
I have seen it many times when I lived in the T & C. I think it is the only place I have seen it. That I can remember anyway :)
|
Good for you! And maybe next time you'll see it in your ideal setting instead of at the office. Good luck!
|
I've seen both moonbows and green flashes in Bequia. I had never even heard of moonbows before seeing one - amazing!

Emily,
We will be going to Grand Cayman in May and we are staying on Seven Mile Beach which is on the West coast. I have read about this Green Flash and will be looking for it.I will have my camera ready to TRY and take a picture of it.(might be kinda tough to catch);) Christie |
Good luck with that, Christie. Hope you and your family enjoy GC as much as you did St. John. Aren't you just so excited you can hardly stand it? I've got our next trip coming up in May, too, and after this long New England winter all I can think about are the beaches and snorkeling on Vieques!
|
Yes!I am very excited.:) I hope that you have a great trip to Vieques and I want to see some pictures and a trip report upon your return!
I have a great new camera and camcorder..so I will be sharing my pictures with you guys.Hopefully they will include the "Green Flash". Christie |
I went to a Halloween party in Sint Maarten years ago where a guy painted his body green, put on a trench coat & went as the Green Flash. Does that count? :S-
|
Yes, that definitely counts. But don't stare too long or you will go blind, carrybean!
|
But I bet I'd have clear skin! ;;)
|
Seen it twice in GC on 7 ml beach. and in Eleuthera. Once sober and the other. Well u know.
|
Sunnybpoy- I beg to disagree/ It is, as has been stated elsewhere- an actually neon green flash, like a flash bulb. You are just seeing some lingering eyes shadow if you are describing the green flash as a dark halo. It's really a flash! I've seen it twice- neither time in Caribbean. Neither time looking for it...Good Luck.

To Peterman - actually if you read all the various links on the web-site I mentioned you'll see lots of references to the "green halo" as being a version of the "green flash". There are quite a few photos on those sites showing the "green halo" but referring to it as a green flash - presumabably the accompanying articles were written by someone a lot smarter than me so I'll defer to the experts. The "halo" is the one that is most common. The "flash" that looks like a "flash bulb" happens farless often. You are more likely to see it as a "red flash", and I've seen plenty of those, both in the Caribbean and near my other home in the southwest USA.

Hi
Well, I'll consider myself very lucky then! Peterman |
Emily,
I did look for this "Green Flash" while in GC.I never saw it,but then again the sunsets had alot of clouds covering the sun once it reached the water. So that probably is why I did not see it. Christie |
It has to be pretty clear at the horizon for you to see it.
|
ttt for ej to read my post.
