No-see-ums on Vieques?

I am thinking of going to Vieques in late Oct but just read a comment on the enchanted-isle site about avoiding the beaches in the late afternoon b/c of "no-see-ums" that start biting then. Does anyone know what no-see-ums are? They don't sound good! Is there a certain time of year when they are a problem? Is this something to be concerned about b/c I want to enjoy the beaches all day, especially in the late afternoons. Thanks!

The only beach where we have found this to be an issue is Green Beach, which is on the western side of the island. Don't know why - maybe because Green is near some mangrove swamps. In any event, you definitely don't want to go there without bug spray. We have not found this to be an issue any where else on the island. You'll love Vieques!

No-see-ums aka sand fleas are everywhere in the Caribbean. I got bitten all over at dusk when I forgot to put on some bug spray when the sun goes down. Just be vigilant about the bug spray at key times and you'll be fine.

I also think it may depend on the beach. Green Beach is often mentioned. We also encountered them while we were scrambling rocks at Secret Beach.
I spent many afternoons at Sun Bay, each day I would stay a bit longer as I realized how the colors changed as the sun started to go down. It was so peaceful and relaxing, I often did not go home til 6 pm, but my point is that I was never bothered by the no-see-ums at Sun Bay. I do make a point to always carry bug spray, though.
Have a great trip

We were bothered at Green beach while we walked our half mile to our snorkeling entrance. But, then I'm always bothered as a female, while my husband is not. For our Bonaire trip next week, I have been taking vitamin B for a month, and intend to take it while I am there. I'll try anything if there is any chance it will work. I'll let you know if it helps. I'll try without bug spray to make it a good trial.

Don't let bugs, or anything else, stop you from going to Vieques. It is one of our favorite islands for many reasons. Enjoy. Owa

Don't let the bugs stop you from going to Green Beach, though. In the morning it's often deserted, and the water is very still and clear. One of my favorites!

I should have mentioned that at Green Beach it's really only an issue in the late afternoon. Otherwise, it's fine.
