Nightlife in Negril

My wife and I are Planning a trip to Couples Negril in March. We've read alot of opinions on it and most say it is a fairly quiet resort. What we are wondering is about leaving the resort at night and visiting some of the local bars. Are there many close by? One we heard of was Margaritiville in Negril. Is that close to our resort? How are the taxis? Nice? expensive? thank you for your respnoses

Mark

My husband and I have been to Negril eight times and love it there. If you are looking for true Jamaican entertainment, you have to go to Alfred's on the Beach for the reggae party. I think they have it every Tuesday and Friday night. If you are looking for a nice place to eat off site, the Chicken Stroganov w/Fettucine and the atmosphere at Kuyaba are to die for. Hope you enjoy Negril as much as we have!

Are the majority of the people at Alfred's tourist or locals. I also assume it's considered safe for tourist. Where is it located in relationship to Couples.

Thanks !!

I'd say all the bars in Negril are safe for tourists, certainly the ones on the beach. You will find a mix of tourists, locals and ex-pat Americans at Alfred's...other beach bar/live music places that go on different nights are Roots Bamboo, Risky Business, Margaritaville, Bourbon Beach (formerly DeBuss).

At some, you may be offered drugs, just no thanks them and that's that. Single women or a couple of women may be asked to dance. Again, no thanks them if you don't want to.

The taxi you take there can pick you back up if you care to arrange that, or you can take one of the many that wait by the clubs for people coming out. Arrange the price before you get in and have exact change.

If you go to Alfred's make sure you try a dirty banana...theirs are the best!

Don't bother showing up before 10 or later unless you like it quiet :)

Mark: My wife and I will be at Couples Negril from 2/27 to 3/6. When are you going to be there?

As for Alfred's, can someone give me an idea of what goes on there? What's it like?

Alfred's is a bar/restaurant on the beach. Actually they have a few rooms also but it's not mainly a hotel.

They have live music certain nights.

http://www.alfreds.com/

Rick's Cafe is fun for live music, restaurant/bar and 30 foot diving. I agree with Liza the dity bananas are good also try a MJB (making Jamaican babies).

Does couples have a active nightlife at the resort. How does it compare to the Riu.

William Jan 16th, 2003 11:25 AM

I think that most resorts have there own entertainment.

Are these off resorts really safe and how is the entertainment.Been to Rick's and the band was much better then the resort house band, what about the others?

liza Jan 16th, 2003 12:29 PM

Are they really safe? Plenty of tourists go to them...you'll just have to try it and see how you feel, I guess. Take a taxi and ask him to wait for you if you are nervous...or if you get friendly with a tour guide/driver, invite him to come in with you and buy him a beer or two...it can get very crowded and if you go in nervous I guess that can compound it - it's nice to have a friend along who knows the runnings.

The quality of the music varies...they have house bands and sometimes well known artists come and play...they're all fine, mostly they play reggae covers, for the tourists.

Rick's dies soon after sunset...the beach bars pick up later, around 10-11.
