Nevis Restaurants/Things to do
Which restaurants do you recommend in Nevis? Also, is it a hard hike to the top of the peak. Anything else that we should not miss? We are going next week and I can't wait.
Thanks |
Montpelier Plantation (dinner esp) (w/o kids), Bananas Bistro, Hermitage for Sunday breakfast or for dinner. Golden Rock for lobster salad (lunch). I normally eat a few times at the Four Seasons for lunch. Gallipot. Nisbet for lunch if you go to the beach there. You don't have to do this, but I seem to end up there during lunch time and the restaurant is right there on the beach.
The hike is not hard, IMO. The botanical gardens are really nice. I am trying to think of what I normally do there. Its nice to just relax and read a book, or go to the beach at Nisbet and sit under a palm tree. It is so beautiful there, just being there is special :) I go back in a few weeks and I cannot wait. I hope you have a fabulous trip! Where are you staying? |
If you plan to hike to the top of Nevis Peak, please consider a guide.
The peak is nearly 4000 ft, the steepest in true rainforest conditions requiring some nearly vertical climbing using roots and vines as climbing aids in places. The peak is nearly always surrounded in a cloud which provides the moisture to create the rainforest conditions. Truely an unforgettable hike. Bring sturdy hiking shoes. Here is one persons account of going it alone on a side trail......... http://tomazic.info/nevis2001e.htm |
I highly recommend the chef at Oualie Beach Hotel. Their beach is a great place to hang out. You can also ferry over to St. Kitts, which is a great island, also. Have fun!
|
Santa - thanks for bringing that up. I know someone who went without a guide and he got lost. I am not sure how experienced you are with hiking, but of course a guide is a smart thing... have fun!
|
I would like to be more experienced than I am at hiking, but I have gotten somewhat overweight since I gave up smoking.
And to the OP, I have not climbed either peak-Nevis or Liamiga, but have been told many first hand tales at the bars(s). The hike can be done by one that considers themselves "fit". |
Santa - good for you for giving up smoking! That is great. I am sure one day you will make the hike. :)
|
MIM's restaurant list is a good one. Also consider having lunch at the Tea Room at the Botanical Gardens. For an upscale (and pricey) dining experience try the relatively new Coconut Grove restaurant. For casual lunch or dinner there's Pizza Beach. You'll also find good food at Mount Nevis Hotel.
Agree that you should use a guide if you want to climb Nevis Peak. Check out Jim Johnson's Top to Bottom Tours for other interesting hikes. |
In addition to the great recs above, have a painkiller and a meal at Sunshine's. Check out the BBQ and music jam night at Oalie Beach Hotel (it was Tuesdays when we were there in Oct). Be sure to ask in the restaurant for Chef Jason, who sometimes posts here. Food is wonderful (my first tender steak in the Caribbean!), and the cast of characters in the bar is fun.
We loved driving around the island and stopping at the blue signs to have a look around, I think they are called "Nevis Heritage Trails" and most lead to ruins that can be mysterious and beautiful. Check out the racetrack. Stop at Golden Rock Plantation and look around, maybe hike the short "monkey trail" (we saw wild pigs but no monkeys!). Shop at Bocane Pottery. Watch out for goats! And monkeys! Another fun thing to do is pack a small backpack, wear your swimsuit, and park at Cades Bay Hotel. From there you can walk all the way to Sunshines, if the tides are right and you have water shoes. There are a couple of beach bars as your reward, and the beaches are gorgeous. Have a great time! |
I've had some good meals and a good times at Le Bistro, downtown Charlestown.
Bring cash as they do not accept credit cards. Popular with expats and locals too. |
There is an easier hike from the Golden Lemon inn to a place on Mount Nevis called the Source. . . you definitely don't need a guide and it is a fun hike. . . i thought the pottery place in Newcastle by the airport was great. . we bought a few pieces
|
LOL, I forgot about Coconut Grove. I have been several times and it is a hit or miss. sometimes its good, sometimes not so good. The pizza is good though. It is a beautiful restaurant though.
Also, I think the last poster meant Golden Rock, Golden Lemon is on St Kitts. ejs - I would not worry to much. I am sure you will have good food and a great time! :) |
You have received some great advice about spending time in Paradise. We just returned from Nevis a month ago and would like to add that if you have lunch at the FS, eat at the Mango's restaurant. It is their newest - right by the water, brightly painted and better food than the Cabana. Also, the best dinner we had was at the Cooperage at the Old Manor House. You really don't hear much about it, but we sent other people and they came back and raved about it as well. There is also horseback riding and sunset sails aboard catamaran's
IMO, there is no other Caribbean island that is as alluring or beautiful as Nevis. Enjoy! |
Thanks to everyone for your great info. I am so looking forward to go to Nevis. We are staying at The Nisbet and do plan to drive around the island.
You were all so helpful abd I do appreciate it. |
I recommend Miss June's. Reservations recommended.
For hiking contact Jim Johnson at Top to Bottom Hiking. E-mail [email protected] |
Visit www.nevisisland.com for more information on things to see and do while in Nevis and restaurant options.
A website you might find helpful is www.discover-stkitts-nevis-beaches.com and www.myislands.myeyez.net Lots of forum members have been to Nevis in the past. A must is Sunshine's!! www.sunshinenevis.com Have a great time! |
If you want to go to Miss Junes you MUST have a reservation. She is not open every night, have Nisbet call for you to see which night(s) she will be open during your stay (if you decide to do that) She has to have a head-count early because sometimes if she does not have enough people she does not open.

Two new restaurants have opened up in St. Kitts.
Chevy's Calypso Bar located on beautiful Pinney's Beach. 869-664-5164 Open daily at 11AM. Live music every full moon. Karaoke & DJ every Monday night. Entertainment every Saturday. Enjoy a "Stinger" rum cocktail and delicious meal while watching the sunset.... "Mingles" is located also located on Pinney's Beach. They serve a local 3 course dinner menu. (BBQ Spare Ribs, Baked Foil Chicken, Curried Mutton) Prices are between 50-65 EC and includes a starter & dessert. |
hi,
Skb fan, both those restaurants are on Nevis and Mingles is in Cades bay area, about 2 miles from pinneys on the main road, where the old Cla Cha Del was. There is a beach view, but it is about 300 yrds from the water front. We are very excited about mingles, it is a local style restaurant which will be great for my guest, as I have only been able to send people to one restaurant for a while now if they wanted local food. They opened last night, so I haven't been able to try them, but i'll post back when I do. I'm sure I won't be let down I know a few of the cooks and they are great at there craft and profesional. |
I really enjoyed Double Deuce. Beach restaurant...very relaxing, try the stinger there, too.
MIM04 had great recommendations! Dave |
I'm curious...has anyone here visited Miss June's lately? I was there in November 05 and my experience was, well, disappointing. The food was good, but the wine did not "flow" (in fact the waitress explained she was instructed not to pour any more wine - this was before the third course), and Miss June hardly spoke. Also, nobody could tell us the price in E.C. dollars (we only had EC with us) - the hostess asked us to calculate it ourselves (she had a calculator and we did not). Instead of making the rounds visiting the tables (as I had heard she does), I found her in the bar arguing loudly with her chef when I went to the Ladies Room. Weird. I really wanted to like Miss June's...and I'm hoping it was a fluke.
|
Joan, how much was the dinner at Miss June's? Guess she wanted you to pay in US$'s.
We didn't go there, but I'm interested in your account, because it's always described as a joyous dinner party. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Oprah encouraged her to open a restaurant. Thanks for posting about it. There seem to be few firsthand descriptions. CW |
Joan-
I had read your report before going to Nevis which is why we DIDN'T eat at Miss June's. I think they couldn't have made it any clearer to you that they wanted to be paid in US dollars than if they hit you with a brick and that's not good service. Also, we discovered when we were in Nevis that there are no borders when it comes to celebrities. One of the staff at the FS told us about Oprah and John Travolta coming into the hotel from her boat parked offshore from the hotel. So, I'm sure that Miss June was on her very best behavior for Oprah. We were pleased with all of the choices that we did make and never missed going there. |
I went to Nevis in '03 so there's probably more current info. We stayed at FS and loved it. Ate at Sunshine's one night & it was insane. Something you must experience. Go early because after waiting at our table for a very long time, the waiter finally acknowledged us & told us they were out of fish. Somehow they came up with some. My husband said he thought our waiter was "stoned". After dinner, we wanted to pay & were sent to the bar to recite an accounting of what we had ordered. Picnic tables in the sand. It was fun, but go with a laid back attitude expecting very informal service! We also ate at Bananas & absolutely loved it. Great food & great service. Very peaceful. Miss June's was not open because it was summer & was considered off season.
|
Miss Junes is about $65 US PP. It was actually Steadman who encouraged her to open.
|
Knowing - that is exactly why a lot of celebs. go there because no one bothers them and they are treated more like regular people :)
There is almost always someone there who is famous. Funny thing though, a lot of people do not recognize them at all, people who in the states would be recognized right away. |
Thanks for the information MIM.
cw |
Price update for Mrs. Junes is $85.00US everythings going up these days. Just FYI!!
|
Oh, thanks Jason. I just heard today it was $65.
|
Kinda funny after I saw your post I started to do some calling. I called 4 seasons they told me $85.00. Oualie it seems was getting it for our guest at $65.00, but it is now $75.00.
So I called Mrs. June and she told me it is $86.00 which includes all you wine, sherry, cocktail party and of course the food. But she did say she is barely breaking even and she is getting tired, no idea her age but its getting up there. So if your going to try this ICON of Nevis go quick. She did say she give 1/2 off for children, but really doesn't want children under 12years old. It is a late night affair and I would have to agree with her, this is an adult night out. So there you have it from the lady herself. LOL |
Yes, I definitely would not bring kids, it is not fun for them at all. That is interesting about the prices. I know that a lot of people still do get the $65 rate though, so who knows.
I will see June next week so I will ask her too. |
MIM04, how was Miss June('s)?
|
Hi Joan - we actually did not make it this time. We ate pretty much everywhere else though :)
|
MIM,
Can you tell us more? So we can live vicariously through your dining . . . !!!! CW |
Yes Yes, inquiring minds want to know!
|
We'll just sit right here while you give us an endless report so we all have something to dream about tonight!
