Nevis Beaches and Culture

Can anyone comment on the beaches and culture of Nevis? I have read conflicting reports regarding the beauty of the beaches. I understand that they are not the stereotypical white poweder sand with clear blue water - but are they nice in their own right? How are the people of Nevis? Are they welcoming to tourists?

Much has been written on this forum about the beaches on Nevis. Use the search feature above to access those posts (there are literally hundrds written in the past 2 years). As you already surmised, the beaches on Nevis have darker sand than you find on the coral based islands. The beaches on the north side of the island have a lighter tint but they are not brilliant white. As a result, the surrounding waters lack the bright turquoise blue hue that most people associate with the Caribbean. Instead the water color is a darker "steel blue" in color, something like lapis lazuli. The beaches are, for the most part, very picturesque in that they are lines with thousands of natural growing palm trees and other native vegetation. Go to and click on both the "beach" and photo links. You'll find several photos that accurately depict Nevis' beaches. Only you can decide if they meet your crieteria.

As for the people of Nevis, they are among the friendliest in the Caribbean and are very welcoming to tourists.

Nevis has some of the most friendly and welcoming people in the Caribbean.

The beaches are nice - not known for being the best in the region - but still very pretty. Water is a darker blue due to the sand's being a darker color.

I couldn't agree more with what Sunnyboy and Diana already said.

The beaches are great and the people are even better!
I spent a week there with my family and went to the beach every day. No traffic no crowds, just relaxation

I will echo our Forum Friends's comments and assessments. Do follow Sunnyboy's suggestion of searching "Nevis" and reading the comments.

I'd like to comment on the culture and great people of this island.

As said before you will find that Nevisians are the kindest people in the islands and tourism is there lifes blood. I have had the pleasure to work with these folks for over 3 years and I have never had a better time at work.

I would also venture to say, but have no evidence of it yet, that Nevis is one of the safest Island in the caribbean. We have a very low cime rate and I still leave my keys in the ignition of my car. But with that said as travelers you should always be cautious. This low crime rate has to do not only with the small population, but also there Christian background and High morals.

The beaches are nice, but that has been said many many times. Have a great trip and we'll see you soon.

Chefjason has it exactly right about the low crime rate and basic honesty of the Nevisian People. While we were there, I inadvertently left my (expensive) camera on the seat of our jeep when we went into town for lunch and shopping. On many other islands, I would have been minus one camera within minutes. But hours later, when I returned to the jeep, there it was, undisturbed. We found the local people uniformly welcoming, friendly and totally charming. And yes, as many have said, the beaches are fine.
