never been to the carib

what is the currency used most often, say like in jamica?

Melissa Jan 14th, 2002 03:09 AM

each country has thier own currency. Jamaica is the Jamaica dollar. They do prefer US though. We took Jamaican, and they all asked for US and looked annoyed with Jamaican.

I've been to many islands in the Caribbean and they all LOVE to use the good old US dollar.

Bill Jan 14th, 2002 04:20 AM

Of course they want the US dollar, it's worth more. In St. Kitts and Nevis it's EC dollars. $2.70 to the US dollar.

jamaicans to prefer the us $. their money is only approx .43 to our $. convert your money at the airport. that way they can't get ya with the price of american money.

s140 Jan 14th, 2002 06:47 AM

should on covert the money at the airport before you leave the US or once in jamica?

ohliz Jan 14th, 2002 10:07 AM

We always use JA$ though US$ is accepted most everywhere too. Prices are quoted in J$ on menus and stuff, except at the big resorts and tourist-oriented restauerants, so I find it easier to just use JA$. No one has ever asked me for US if I offer J$.

The airport has the worst rate (42 to 1 last week), the cambios usually have the best (46 to 1 last week) and the banks are about 45-1 but lines are very long.

Cambios change travellers checks also, we bring most of our $ that way for peace of mind, if lost or stolen you can get $ in 24 hours with Amex.

:)Liz
