Negril questions
 

We have been all over the Caribbean - but never to Jamaica. We are leaving next week to go to Negril and are staying at Country Country. We are always open to suggestions from previous travelers. We like to do about anything (except diving). Love to eat where the locals eat and explore also. Anyone with suggestions, would be appreciated. Also, we already have some suggestions from previous posts about transfers to Negril, but would be open for more opinions.

Hi lovecarib! There is a place pretty close, across the street from CC called Cool Spot that has a real "local" feel with great Jamaican cuisine. The onsite restaurant at CC is a favorite of ours....very cool bamboo bar. The Patty Mon (Norman) usually makes it up the beach by about 1 PM and his cardboard box is loaded with beef patties and cocoa bread. You may need to get down the beach a ways, however, as sometimes he runs out by the time he can make it up to CC. Stay on the lookout for Dean, the Pork Guy, as he moves fast! He can be spotted wearing a white chef's apron with a box full of jerk pork strapped from his neck. Excellent! The best jerk chicken can be found across from Coco La Palm at a stand called Best in the West. Ice cold Red Stripes, as well! Hope this helps a bit....enjoy your trip and I hope you can tell us all a bit about it upon your return!

There is a "pork guy" too? We would have definitely tried that out. Thanks to you we did know about the Patty Mon. Those things are excellent. Spicy and delicious. We also liked 3 Dives on The Cliffs for lobster and jerk chicken. Jamaican surf and turf.

We just stayed at Country Country and loved it. We ate several meals at Norma's, a few doors down from CC, but our favorite meal was on the cliffs at RockHouse. Yum, Yum. Did anyone tell you about the juice man who comes by on the beach? It is wonderful and so good to sip on after a hot thirsty walk -or sit for that matter! I know you will love it!

Thanks for all the advice! I've come up with another question though. We will be calling back to the U.S. to check on our 3 children. Every island is different. Any suggestions on calling home? Thanks again. Can't wait for Saturday to get here!!

We use email to check in with family. There is internet access where we stay. There are a few internet cafés in Negril. The closest one that I know of to you is called Café Taino across the beach road on the other side of Negril Gardens. There may be access at CC, however. If you absolutely need a phone, try to change your cell service to include international calling. Another option is “renting” a cell phone from a Digi-cel provider and includes unlimited incoming calls from the states and charges per minute for outgoing. Probably $40-50 for the week’s rental.

If you use talkofthetownnegril for your airport transfer, they give you a phone to use during your stay and they stop at the store to buy a calling card to use with it. We bought a $10 or $15US digi-cell card and it gave us quite a few quick calls home to our 3 kids. Talk of the town was $110 round trip to Negril and both drivers were very nice and helpful.
