Need some help-thinking of Bonaire next year

We generally head to the Caribbean each spring [Grand Cayman] and we love it. We thought that we would like to try something different next year and Bonaire keeps coming up.

We like to snorkel, swim and sit in the sun and read on a nice beach with some trees about for occasional shade. Does Bonaire offer these things. Other than this site, where can I go to read more on Bonaire?

Also...how do flights to Bonaire work. We'll be leaving from the Detroit area, so how many connectors do you usually end up taking?

I'd really appreciate a little direction. We'd be looking at a condo, or a perhaps a hotel room. We don't have to be right in the middle of 'the action' and we don't have to have fancy either. Just clean and kept up nice.

Thank you,

If you like to snorkel, Bonaire is the best destination in the Caribbean. The website you want is:

It has everything you need to plan your trip.

We were like you and always go to Cayman. (3 couples) This year we decided to try something new also. Bonaire was mentioned. But after further research, the flights just did not work out - long layovers, etc. (We fly from O'Hare). So now on Thursday we leave for Belize! Actually we are staying on Ambergris Caye. We got a great deal on a 3B/3B condo right on the beach. So much cheaper than Cayman. :) Here's a link if you want to check out info on Ambergris Caye (pronounced key).http://www.goambergriscaye.com/index.html

Thank you all...

Cruisin', I am finding in doing preliminary searches that you are right on the flights. I didn't think it take all that to get to Bonaire, and thought perhaps I was doing something wrong.

Please let me know about your trip to Belize as that is the other island my husband is interested in. We are batting around Belize, Bonaire, or perhaps even Maui!

I am going to put all the sites suggested into a 05 vacation folder and start reading and researching [work in a library, can't help myself.]

Once again, I thank you all for the replies, I will look into each one.

We have been to all three and obviously it depends on what your major preferences are. Bonaire is all water sports. We went for the snorkeling. It's the best we've found on the east coast. While some resorts have beaches, they have brought in the sand. The beaches in Bonaire are mostly coral. Belize has some better beaches, but it will dpend on where you stay. If near San Pedro (on Ambergris Caye) the beach can have heavy foot traffic, since everyone walks the beach in and out of town. The snorkeling is good, but you must use a boat. There is no shore snorkeling there. The feature we loved about Belize was the jungle side. We split our trip between the water and the jungle. Inland, you can explore caves, canoe the rivers, and see some great wildlife. A place to go for some good trip reports is: http://www.turq.com/tripreports.php
