Need restaurant recommendations in Grand Case, St. Martin
 

Hi. I would love some suggestions. We love French and Italian food, but are open to any suggestions (Spiga seems to be a favorite to many). We're looking for casual restaurants, even nicer ones. We don't want any super upscale or too romantic ones (the type you think would not be appropriate to take a 6-year-old to). Thanks!

When we stayed in Grand Case earlier this year, we got to sample a lot of the offerings.

For rock bottom cheap and casual, try one of the lolos (on the beach, in the middle of town). Talk of the Town gets all the raves, but it was mobbed when we were there, so we tried Sky's the Limit. Enjoyed that immensely.

We also got to eat at the fancier (but how "fancy" can you be on the beach) places, include Le Tastevin, L'Escapade, La California and L'Auberge Gourmande. L'Escapade was our favorite, followed closely by Le Tastevin and the others. Really, you can't go wrong ... just walk down the streets, look at the menu boards, and follow your stomach!

I was in St. Martin just before Thanksgiving and had a great dinner at Bistrot Caraibes in Grand Case. They had a delicious sea bass but the most fantastic dish was the fresh Canadian mussels served in a rich, luscious broth. They also have fresh live lobsters in a tank by the sidewalk. The restaurant is not cheap but well worth the price.

I would have eaten in Grand Case another night or two but parking was extremely limited and driving through town was a nightmare. I would recommend driving through in the daytime to get your bearings before attempting it at night.

Instead, I ate a couple of times over in Cul de Sac at an excellent restaurant called "Au Grain de Sel".
The dinners are served on a unique wooden platter and are very generous. One night I had the medallions of veal and on the other, I had an excellent Margarita pizza. They have their own parking lot and are easy to find. They also have a full bar and had an exchange rate (at the time) for dollars of only 1.25.

Thanks Otis. Oh I love mussels. I'm hungry now! We'll be staying at L'Esplanade which I understand is near all the restaurants so we won't need to drive into Grand Case.
