Need island ideas for sisters first visit to the caribbean

My sister is going to be turning 40 in February and would like to go to an all inclusive resort. We can only go for a 4 night/5 day trip and don't want to spend a million dollars. Mexico is on the very bottom of our list and we want somewhere with a nice beach. We looked into Punta Cana but we keep getting mixed reviews (Barcelo resort). We will be flying out of Detroit preferrably on Feb. 17. I did find a resort in Costa Rica that sounded wonderful... RIU All Inclusive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oops nevermind, I was coming on this post to suggest the Mayan Riviera, the Caribbean side of Mexico, around the Playa del Carmen area. There's loads of nice AI's there. But now I see you don't want Mexico.

I'm not crazy about the Punta Cana area because everyone seems "afraid" to leave their resort. I just wouldn't like that situation myself (I've been to the DR but to Sosua and Puerto Plata, on my own).

Suze, if we were to change our minds on Mexico what AI would you recommend in Mayan Riviera?

Sorry I don't have a specific recommendation. I usually go to Puerto Vallarta on the other side, and don't do AI.

I just know from reading travel forums, that the Caribbean side (the stretch from Cancun down thru Playa del Carmen and beyond to Akumal/Tulum) has lots of AI resorts along the beaches there.

Another idea, I was in Negril Jamaica this past summer and there is a good selection of AI's along the beautiful 7-mile beach there.

Just a couple other ideas.

Take a look at the RUI Palace in Aruba. It's new and on a very nice beach.

yes, RUI Aruba is nice but AI is kind of a waste in Aruba where there are so many restaurants. Especially for only 4/5 nights. I wld pick Aruba in February for you & your sis. Check out the many hotels along Palm Beach...Marriott, Holiday inn, Radisson, Hyatt(??? not sure if still there), Westin, etc

We love Aruba & are going back for our 3rd trip in February! ( Does your sister likes going to the casino? Good casinos on Aruba)

I have been to many places in the Caribbean! For your age and because its your sister and you, I would strongly suggest Aruba or the Bahamas. I stayed in the RIU resorts both in Aruba (AMAZING) and in the Bahamas.

I will start with the BAHAMAS- I know that Bahama's is well known for the Atlantis, however the Riu is literally next door to the Atlantis. We spent all of our Nights there (Atlantis) and got the best of both worlds!! We didnt spend an arm and a leg because we went with the AI at the RIU, however we did splurge one or 2 nights because the outside restaraunts are amazing! The nightlife at the Atlantis was great! Casino, shows, lots of places to eat, shop, etc. The only downfall was the beach where the Riu is located is not as nice as the Atlantis beach. We bought a day pass at the atlantis which gave us full grounds access- pools, water slides, etc! It was wonderful! And the weather.... HOT HOT HOT!!!

On to ARUBA- Another amazing spot!! The RIU was AMAZING!!! Beach- BEAUTIFUL!! Weather- almost unbarable... SUNSCREEN to its MAX!!! There are many people your age that travel to Aruba!! Many Casinos, shopping malls, and lots and lots of jewellery!! Very safe island and lots and lots of beauty to see!! We rented a car for 2 days and drove around the entire island!! I cannot even begin to stress its beauty! I read in a previous post that an AI is alost a waste because there are soooo many good places to eat outside of the resort- I AGREE! However, they are cheap and you can do it anyways! Resort food gets tiring and put aside a few dollars and have a nice BDAY dinner out!!

I really hope this helps!!!
