Need infor on Bimini, Bahamas

My wife and I are thinking about vacationing to Bimini in July 1998. We'd like to SCUBA for a 4-5 day package and then explore on our own. Questions: Is it better to stay on south or north Bimini? Is it easy to cross the channel separating them-how do you get across? Where can we rent a Boston Whaler? How much does it cost to rent one? Can you recommend any places to stay that are clearn with A/C? Are there good places on the beach with good snorkeling? Please advise, and thank you. Bob

Visited Bimini for one week in late October, 1990 at the very inn (forget its name right now) that Hemingway stayed and Gary Hart got in trouble. Good things- food, swimming, fishing just all right. Bad things- several obnoxious panhandlers, October is out of season. Place to rent boats in 1990 was Weech's dock.
I think there is only 1 place to stay on Bimini, and that's the Inn. Bimini is very laid back and not much to do other than snorkling, don't know if there is a dive shop on the island. Alot of amenities are for boats comming over from FL.

You may want to try another family island if diving is what you are looking for, there are better islands that are easier to get to, like Eleuthera and Harbour Island.

If you need any more info, please let me know.

BTW, just looked at your email address,
nwohio? I am an alum of Ohio Northern
small world.

tweedy

I went diving for four days around Bimini and it was fantastic!!! There is a dive shop on the island, as you come in, on the left before Big Game Club. There are air tanks at the dock, the shop is across the street on the second level of a building. There is an awesome 1700 ft deep wall, drift diving is amazing. Find a boat that knows the area, they will have many dive sites mapped on GPS. Go to the main bar in town (sorry, cant remember name), there you will find divers, fishermen, many friendly people who can help find dive sites.

The main bar is called The Compleat Angler. It is a lot of fun, especially when the Calypsonians play (the local band). You may want to try kayaking on the flats and you can bonefish as well. The guides name is Trimmer and he knows the area well.
