Ron:
I have your same question. The reason is that I saw a program on the Travel Channel (May 16,1999)about the greater Antilles (Antoine's Once Upon an Island) and after visiting Samana he went in a private plain to this place in the beach which was like something out of a book, everything so rustic, the remote island scenario. Nevertheless he visited various restaurants, including one with a French chef. There were all kinds of small houses, including huts up to big cement houses typical of the tropics. It is in the northern part of the peninsula, not far from Terranas. I wish I could find more information because I want to visit very soon.

Gladys

Hi, guys I think you just found the right person, I had to live in El Portillo for one month (working for a Tour Operator).
It really depends on what you spect from a hotel in the caribbean.
El Portillo is a hotel in the small town of Las Terrenas. It's a 3 star hotel with excellent and clean rooms, nice food and great place to do some nice excursions if you were interested.
It's a paradise to rest and forget of the civilization. Don't go there expecting Big discos, and big buildings. You will find there real nature and as I said a place you wont forget.
The dominican people it's very friendly and they really try to make you feel good.
In general, I really recommend this hotel.
Have a nice trip what ever is going to be your destination.

Ron, I have a brother who is in the Peace Corp living in Samana. Has been for two years. If you are still interested in info on the area I can forward his email address to you. My wife and I spent a week there last Christmas and had the time of our lives. We have high regads for Samana. Not sure about El Portillo. There was two resorts that people clung to on the penninsula that I noticed. If you want to go and experience the area I would recommend a smaller place. Try contacting the Samana Chamber of Commerce.
Regards.
Jon
