Need a trip idea for August
Looking for help with a trip I'll be taking in early-mid August with my twin sister to celebrate our birthday! Don't want to spend a fortune, but would love to go somewhere special. Would love to find a special hotel or resort that was small and intimate, we hate those big places with 50 pools and restaurants and kids. Our idea of special is low key, great beach, snorkeling, food (local is preferred, not expensive, high end stuff), not a lot of activities or "tourists". Would be great if we didn't have to rent a car, if we were close enough to walk to town or restaurants. I've looked at Mexico, but never been there and now getting nervous about how hot and humid it might be then, or crowded with locals on vacation. Also worried a little about hurricanes. Will be flying from Atlanta. Any suggestions would be welcome!

i think you should consider the bahamas. there are several of the islands where most people rent a golf cart rather than a car to get around. i know there are several smaller islands like this, but you might start with harbour island - look at coral sands or pink sands resorts. http://go2-harbourisland.com/
although not a golf cart island your post made me think of cape santa maria beach resort or possibly stella maris on long island.
i don't really know the bahamas that well but if you like this area other fodorites can help advise islands/hotels.
another possibility might be sibonne on provo, turks & caicos. small boutique hotel in the middle of gorgeous grace bay beach. in walking distance of some restaruants. http://sibonne.com/
re heat/humidity in mexico in august. it will be very hot & very humid. i have a gf who went to a wedding & fainted after taking a beach walk - she is a runner. another friend fainted after shopping (& probably a couple cocktails) in cancun. obviously not everyone will have this problem & if you live in atlanta you may not be affected the way my new england based friends were.
if you stay on isla holbox in aug you can go out to see the migrating whale sharks & it is a golf cart island. isla mujeres would be another good option. decent snorkeling, lots of small local places to eat.

August is just a tricky month, either for the Caribbean or for coastal Mexico.
I don't think you so much need to worry about "locals" crowding out the beaches (though you will see a greater percentage of Mexicans vs Canadian/US in the summer than in the winter 'high season'). Playa del Carmen or Isla Mujeres might work (both easily reached flying into Cancun).
Another place that fits most of what you ask for is Negril Jamaica. It's a gorgeous 7-mile beach with good food, town to walk to, etc. But it will also be plenty hot and humid with some rain in August. Negril is very laid back, there are a few resorts like Couples, etc. but more are smaller authentic Jamaican style hotels. Here's just one example I know of http://www.charela.com/
Because of the time of year you might look at someplace like Bahamas or Bermuda because of being further north a bit less intense weather?
I don't think your problem is choosing a destination, it's more that your chosen month of travel is hot/humid/rain in most of the Caribbean or Mexico with a beach!

Weather wise in the Caribbean August is not a great month. However based on your needs and wanting to avoid hurricanes, then Barbados would be a good choice, plus for that time of year there are all sorts of good traveld deals to the island and often great rates for accommodation than any other time of the year

If I look at Barbados, or any other islands out of the hurricane zone or steamy heat, does anyone know of any intimate resorts that are stylish without breaking the bank, maybe something close enough to the beach and a town where we wouldn't have to rent a car to go to nearby places to eat or things to do? Would love to find a place on a smaller island like this. Probably asking the impossible! Thanks, all, for the advice....
