Necessary to rent car in St. John?

Will be in St. John in end of October. Is a car necessary on the island?

Also, how's the weather there in end of Oct/early Nov?

My opinion and I've expressed it many times on this board is that if you don't have a car on SJ, then you really won't get to appreciate the island. The drive from Cruz Bay to Cinnamon Beach is one of my favoites in the world and the first view of Coral Bay is not to be forgotten. Not to mention the ease at which you'll get to explore the many beautiful beaches. As for weather, if you're in the Caribbean in Oct-Nov, be prepared for anything. It's hurricane season !!! BUT, the odds say you'll probably be fine and the weather will be fantastic.

No, it is not necessary but some enjoy the jeeping about and traveling around at their own pace without having to rely on the the taxis or the not-so-reliable bus.

So, far so good (knock on wood)with the weather! With the end of the Cape Verde season closing in and the closer to the end of HS it is, the liklihood of a hurricane or bad weather diminishes. However, keep an eye on the weather forecast! Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could predict accurately? The weather is super usually but ... be watchful!

Rent a jeep (or 4wd) for a least a few days while you're there and see how much you use it. You can get taxis from the towns to Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay beaches, but with your own car you can get around much more easily to all the other beaches on the island. I was glad we had one for our whole stay--we went all over the island, but since they're about $60 a day, you can try it for a few days and then decide.

Yes, you really do need a vehicle to see STJ properly. It is the easiest way to get to all of the wonderful beaches and hiking areas, if you desire, as well as giving you the freedom to come and go as you please. It is well worth the money you will spend (somewhere around $325-$350 for a 4WD vehicle for the week - no taxes - just your gas and a tank should easily last the week. Even if you stay in Cruz Bay and taxi to the beaches, you would want to get to the East End to see Coral Bay and experience its unique character as well. Just my opinion, but go for the vehicle rental. You won't be sorry. STJ is a beautiful island with spectacular beaches and stunning vistas.

The weather should be pretty good - the end of "official hurricane season." We will be there mid November and have been going at that time or a little later for the past half dozen years and we have had wonderful weather.

Enjoy!

Does anyone know if they rent cars on St. John to people under 25? My husband and I are 24.

Can't speak for the weather then, but I would definitely recommend a vehicle. It doesn't necessarily have to be a jeep. We rented a 4WD Suzuki (I think) and saved a few dollars -- never had a problem with it. On days when you might have had too much sun, driving around the island to see its many beautiful sights is a nice way to spend some time and to get to know the island. If you do rent a vehicle, check out Salt Pond Bay for snorkeling -- we loved it! Also went to Jumbie and Maho beaches.
