Must Visit Restaurants in SXM?

I will be visiting SXM in May for a week at the OBBR. Does anyone have any suggestions for great restaurants on the island that they have had good experiences and food at that I must visit?

Grand Case Boulevard is home to a large number of excellent restaurants - it s known as the 'cullinary capital of the Caribbean'.

My personal favorites are Bistro Caraibes, Ti Provencal and La Villa and Auberge Gourmande - but you can't go far wring wherever you eat there.

I'll second David, including his vote for Bistro Caraibes. Other favorites of mine in Grand Case are Le Tastevin, L'Escapade and La California. Also, be sure to try one of the lolos in Grand Case for lunch (or dinner, really) -- I think I've eaten at all of them, and you can always count on grilled fish and some ti punch.

Speaking of ti punch, I haven't eaten there, but have had drinks at Calmos Cafe -- awesome, cosmpolitan beacy-y vibe, especially around sunset.

On the Dutch side of the island, Cupecoy Area, try La Gondola and Rare. In Phillipsburg, try Escargot. For lunch, try Paradise View - restaurant on a hill overlooking Orient Beach Area.....I also hear Mario's in Marigot is great.....but I've never been able to get in - make a reservation early!

BellaClaire is spot on with her Dutch side recommendations !

As far as Paradise View is concerned, I am not so sure, but I will try it agian.

Mario's Bistro in Marigot is excellent, but very noisy because of the lack of sound deadening (or at least it was the last time I was there)- reservations are essential, as is the case for all these places.

On Marina Port Royale in Marigot, you really should try La Tropicana (preferrably outside for lunch on a nice day)or, in the evening, Chanteclair.

Another fairly recent addition to the restaurant scene is Bacchus. It is located - rather unpromisingly - on the Hope Estate (on the French side - not the Hope Estate on the Dutch side !}but it has quickly developed an excellent reputation, and is somewhat different to all the others.

I strongly suggest that you access the websites of all the places suggested before you arrive here, and maybe even make advance bookings. They all have websites, some of which even include their menus and detailed descriptions.

Don't expect to eat cheaply at ANY of them, apart from at the Lolos in Grand Case, where there is also, during the season, a street / craft fair on Tuesday evenings.

Remember that, on the French side of the island the prices will be shown in Euros, but some establishments will display US$ prices also.

It is always advisible to pay in cash dollars (or in Euros) as if you pay with a credit card, the charge will be billed back to you by the issuer as a 'foreign transaction' as it will be charged to your card in Euros by the restaurant or shop.

If you wish to draw dollars from an ATM on the French side, as far as I am aware, there are only two ATMs where you can do so. These are located at the main Credit Mutuel in Marigot, and at the branch of the same bank in Hope Estate where the parking is
