Music to Define St John Experience
 

Need some help:
I'm putting together a video of pictures of our St. John trip to give to our good friends. The video will be set to music... so my question is - What song would you pick to describe a St John experience? Some Raggae? Beach Boys? Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated, and interesting, I'm sure... Thanks.

I would suggest you ask around regarding Calypso or Fungi music while you're in St. John, particularly in the Mongoose Junction shopping center. One record company called Putumayo(sp?) puts out CD's. Also, local artists sell their music at various locations around the island.

It depends a lot on your musical taste. I have created several DVDs of our Caribbean trips and used different songs and artists. Are you looking for one song? One artist? It also depends on how long your video is. I personally love Banana Republics by Jimmy Buffett. Kenny Chesney has a CD, "Be As You Are" with many STJ and BVI references if you like a bit of a country feel. Bob Marley would be an excellent choice if you are into reggae..."One Love" is a nice track familiar to most people. The Beach Boys would be a good So Cal video, in my opinion. Otherwise there are several calypso style steel drum CD's with popular cover songs such as Jamaica Farewell. Have fun!

I can still remember coming down the 'road' on Calabash Boom listening to Paul Simon's Graceland watching the sailboats in Coral Bay. My opinion is any music that you enjoy.....take it and enjoy. With iPods it's just too easy not too. I know Bebo Valdes' De Baracutey is going on the next trip.

I'm going to reveal my Parrothead side here, but anything Jimmy Buffet reminds me of the islands. Agree Changes in Lattitude is a good one. Also One Particular Harbor and lastly, one of my favorites, Everybody's Talking. Not his original song, but my favorite line is "Going where the weather suits my clothes". Has a nice Caribbean sound to the background music. These songs are not particular to St John, but have a nice, peppy, island vibe to them.

Roberto, I was in the middle of delivering a 42 foot Beneteau from Little River, SC to Key West for Race Week back in the mid 1990s.

I took the last leg of the helm from Biscayne Bay (emergency stop) to Key West Florida.

I was sailing into Key West about 6AM when the rest of my crew was below deck asleep. I'll never forget the beauty of Key West with the sun rising in the background (we drew about 7ft and had to come in west to east)and I had Paul Simon's Graceland Live in Central Park with Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes playing wide open.

One of those moments in your life that are perfect!

Suavecito is by Malo, led by Carlos Santana's brother Jorge. Yeah, that's a good one for the islands.

Here's a really obscure one, but very island appropriate- Sailing by Jo Mama. The group was mostly made up on associates of James Taylor and Carole King, including Danny Kootch.

"Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" has a lot of meaning in my life as well - it was playing as I gave birth to my first child - a son, ironically -who we named, by the way Wilson McCartney Joseph, speaking of musical influences.

Or, I should say, defines a special moment in my life as well...to say the least.
