Mosquitoes in Jamaica

Hi we are going to Jamaica staying at Hyatt Zilara Rose. Has anyone had any experience of this resort and the need for repellent. Is normal repellent ok or do you need jungle formula. Thanks

I don't know the answer, but mosquitos vary by season and weather conditions.

When is this trip? What month?

The intensity of Mosquitoes and their pesky relatives known as no-see-in’s is more weather and habitat related rather than time of year.

They are more prevalent after periods of heavy rains (when their eggs hatch) and when there are little or no breezes. The are most active in the hour or so before and after sunrise and/or sunset especially on the beach near where the vegetation meets the sand and in or around salt ponds and standing water and in rain forests and areas with dense vegetation. You can lessen your exposure by refraining from the use of perfumes, colognes, after shaves, scented body splashes, hair sprays and similar products as the “sweet” aromas act as an attractant.

When hiking in the rain forest or other dense vegetation it is best to use a powerful repellant with DEET. For normal activities during the day you probably won’t need any repellent. If you are in the areas at times mentioned above a standard repellent is all you’ll need.

Sure, but isn't the weather dependent somewhat on time of year? Bugs more likely in or after rainy season??

Deet repellant is needed.

Thanks for your help. Just returned and only had 2 small bites. Took jungle formula deet and this seemed to work. Had a lovely time and got to see a bit of Jamaica away from the touristy parts.

Absolutely bring repellant. In '90, we'd brought a newfangled tech item that supposedly repelled the insects by 'pulsing energy rays' or some other bullshit.
Then not 2 minutes after we plopped down in our rooms, God's sense of humor: a few mozzies attacked as though the device had evaporated!

I screamed myself hoarse when demanding our money back from the travel-store manager upon our arrival back home.
I am done. the blue crystals

This post is six years old, and I’m assuming that the OP is back by now as they gave a brief report

Thx AG--I had not noticed.

Bugs (or not) depend on the time of year and the type of place you are located... on the beach, in the jungle, in the mountains, etc.
