Mosquito-free beach?
 

I would like to go to the Caribbean for the first time in March and am hoping to find a place with relatively few mosquitoes. I had read that Aruba had drier temperatures but on another website someone said they had gotten bitten by mosquitoes there. Any suggestions for good beach places that have few mosquitoes, if any? Thanks!

We have been to a number of islands and have never had a mosquito problem. I did have major problems with some kind of bite on the island of St. Lucia, however.

I was never bit by a mosquito in Aruba or any of the other islands I have been to. I am sure there are mosquitos on all of the islands, but the drier ones with a constant breeze like Aruba would probably be your best bet. I wouldn't park my beach chair next to any shrubs. I would stay out in the open areas to avoid mosquitos.

On the beach it isn't the mosquitoes as much as it is the sand fleas...invisible little guys that come out at sunset or after a rain and get your ankles and calves....you don't realize until it's too late....

Never had a mosquito problem on Aruba in September, nor in Negril, Jamaaica, in September or December. We've stayed at both Palm and Eagle Beach in Aruba -- the breezes probably have something to do with it. As far as Negril, I've heard some complaints about mosquitoes at the low-budget resorts, but at Swept Away, where we stayed 4 times, we never had a single bite.

As others have said, sand fleas and little no see-ums are more of a hazard that mozzies. However, a beach chair will easily get you above these hazards. At 4 1/2 lb the collapsible beach chair distributed by Lost Bwana of Florida is the best I have found - www.lostbwana.com

As long as the ocean breeze is blowing and you are on the beach, you will not have a problem with mosquitos. Otherwise, bring OFF.

Mosquitos were horrible in St. Kitts at the end of March....we had no issues at all in Jamaica, Nassau or Punta Cana.

I hate mosquitos but they love me. The best place I have been to without the hassle of mosquitos was Bonaire. The trade winds keep them away and the trade winds feel delicious on the body as they breeze by.

I can tell you from my limited experiece in the Caribbean that mosquitos come with the territory in less there is a good breeze. I have been to the Bahamas-Freeport-several times and don't recal any. Everytime it has been in February or March and it is usually breezy and can even get slightly cool. Cozumel is horrendous in October. As soon as the sun goes down: Watch Out! Break out the Bug Spray and cross your fingers that it will work. I am a mosquito magnet anyway, but I thought they were pretty aggressive. The sand fleas are a little bad there. We were staying on the beach, but be aware that it is pretty swampy there and a perfect breeding ground for mosquitos!
Also found them bad staying on San Pedro Island a little farther down in Belize, but still the Caribbean. They were BRUTAL there. We stayed on sunrise side facing the reef. As soon as the sun came up, the breeze stopped and BAM! Mosquito city! Again, I was there in October. Going to Little Cayman soon and haven;t heard any complaints, so hoping....
