Morning or Afternoon Snorkle Trip in Grand Cayman

Hi - Our family (myself, wife, kids (10 and 8) are thinking of taking Capt. Dexters half day snorkelling trip. Is there much of a difference between the morning and afternoon trip? Is the snorkelling better or waves calmer during a particular time of day?

I am just looking to see if there are any reasons for taking the morning trip or afternoon trip versus the other.

Thanks again for all your help.

We went with Captain Dexter last summer and had a nice time. We did the morning trip. If there are a lot of cruise ships in the day you want to go, I'd recommend the afternoon trip. We picked the day when the least amount were docked, so decided to do the am. There were still a lot of people at Stingray City, but we had no problem getting around.

Thank you for the reply. We plan on taking the tour on our last full day in GC when there are no cruise ships in dock.

We just got back from two weeks on Cayman and did an afternoon three hour snorkle trip with Captain Marvin'swith our 4 and 6 year old boys. Some days there were 5 or 6 cruise ships and the morning snorkel trips were packed. We still had about 40 people on the boat and no cruise ship passengers. You can call in the morning and find out the conditions before you go. Going in even mildly wavy conditions is not ideal with kids. Sat or Sunday mornings are the slowest times for the snorkeling reservations according to the woman at Capt Marvins. Hope that helps.

In most places in the Caribbean and bahamas where there is still good snorkeling we have found and been told by dive/snorkel operators that the best time to see the most fish is 7-11 AM but most small group tour boats, which are best, do not go out until 8:30-9. If you are going before early April the bight sunlight will not be out until 9 and the sunlight enhances the color of the corals and fish.

Is it good to go on Sunday when cruise ships are in dock too? I am debating between Friday when no ships are in dock and sunday when there are 3 ships. Your recommendations are greatly appreciated.
