Moorings Tortola trip for five days, need suggestions

My husband and I are taking our first sailing trip with another couple to BVI with Moorings in three weeks. We're starting out in Tortola and ending in Tortola...doesn't leave us much time for exploring. Any suggestions on how to optimize our time???

Thanks!
Jamie

You'd be surprised at how much of the BVI you'll be able to experience in the 5 days you have aboard your boat. But there's no need to try to see it all; wherever you end up, you will be surrounded with the beauty of the islands.

Are you sailing bareboat, or will you have a captain/crew? If you have crew, trust them to give you an itinerary that hits the highlights (geared to correspond with your interests). If you are going bareboat, study your cruising guide, and identify one must-see spot for each day you sail, and then let the rest fall in place as you map your trip. Don't try to see it all; keep the pace slow and go with the flow. Don't even think about fitting in Anegada on such a short trip.

I have sailed in the BVI 3x, and each time visited different places. I could probably sail there 10 more times and see different places each time. So much of what makes the BVI special is the easy, breezy, laid-back attitude of the islands and the people -- try not to give in to the pressure to see it all at once.

I have reports of all 3 of my BVI sails (2 with Moorings) posted on my personal website -- www.homestead.com/islandtime/MainPage1.html -- or feel free to write me directly if you have any further questions.

Fair winds,
Eva

Hi!

Eva--just had to post a message to say that I LOVED your website detailing your charters!

My husband and I are going to charter our first sailboat (we just got certified last fall with Sea Dog Sailing in the BVI's), with four of our friends this spring. Reading your stories makes me very excited for our own adventures. And I told my husband the story about the "Entertainment Channel getting a report about the empty "ghost" ship..." We were both laughing out loud at that one! Also helps me feel a little nervous about our first time as our own crew...at least we know other people do silly things...the trick is just to do them in a harmless way when noone else is around!

Abby:
Glad you enjoyed the reports. If you are looking for more BVI chartering stuff, visit the BVI portion of www.traveltalkonline.com. There was recently a thread there about the dumbest things people ever did on a charter (my husband would be mortified to know that I contributed a story!). Lots of other good BVI chartering info there too.

My husband and I and 3 other couple sailed from Moorings last July on 45 ft. cat. Great sailing; Moorings will allow you to store extra luggage etc-do it-it gives you more room on boat. Maps will help you decide which islands you have time to go to. We went to Sandy Cay upon setting sail-snorkeled awhile then on to Jost Van Dyke for the night. Had dinner on island at Foxys-fun and good. Norman Island and the Bite next day. Lunch at Billy Bones. Next the Baths; then to Virgin Gorda. NExt day to Cooper Island and back into Torola final day. I would suggest mooring or anchoring by 3p.m.-moorings get taken early. One of our best vacations; relaxing, wonderful sailing and weather. Take a good book and some Jimmy Buffett CD's.
