Montserrat volcano activity??
 

Anyone know how how Montserrat is now? I have seeing numerous postings on volcano activity and such, but most of it has been from 2002 and before. I am looking at a number of villa's there for my honeymoon and want to make sure it is a good place to travel to. Advice? Thanks!

Activity is usually reported in my local paper and I haven't seen anything in quite awhile. However, I'm not so sure that the whole island is inhabited after previous eruptions.

I would research your option very well because I honestly don't see many postings on this board about people traveling there. However, I could be wrong and perhaps it's a popular tourist destination after all.

I went to Montserrat on a day trip from Antigua on my honeymoon. The island population is up to around 6,000 or so now, if my memory serves me correctly. The part of the island where the volacano came down is empty, but they are rebuilding on theother side (the northside, I think). It's a beautiful place, and the people there are lovely. As for staying longer than a day, I don't know that I would, only because I didn't get a chance to see what there is to do there besides tour the volcano areas! I'm sure someone else could give you more imput. I would definitely go back for a day though. And if your there for a honeymoon, then you may not need much more ;)

We went on a day trip to Montserrat as well when we were in Antigua. The portion of the island we saw was DEVASTATED!! I can't imagine that there would be much to do. There was one lovely small hotel, but other than that, there wasn't much.

I'm uncertain to exact status of Montserrat currently. I last visited Montserrat 6 months before the volcano erupted. Its always been a bit of a chuckle the flight there, straight into the cliff then hard bank left, not sure what side of the plane was better but there was praying by the locals. Landing ok after the sweep from the cliffs, to arrive at one of the most friendly airports. Amusing was the luggage belt, it was about 6' x 3' why bother to motorize it was the funny part, but all efficient and broad smiles, the first man to greet just simply asked "how long are you staying?" we replied "one week", he said "one week is not enough", HE WAS RIGHT!

For the villas, when we were there we rented and most are overlooking what was a pretty good golf course, I imagine they've cleaned that all up, wouldn't seem tooo difficult. Not a ground zero. Go for it if you can do great island and low cost.
