Montpelier or Nisbet
 

Planning our first trip to Nevis early 2006. We are torn between these 2 resorts. Know that Nisbet is on beach and Motnpelier is not, but that isn't an issue with us. Things we are looking for are great service, nice comfortable rooms, great food, great views, all around nice atmosphere. Any info you can give to help us decide would be much appreciated.

We faced the same decision between Montpelier and Nisbet and decided on Nisbet mainly because it would be significantly less expensive. The Montpelier package for six nights was about $300 more expensive than Nisbet's six night package but it only covered 3 dinners while Nisbet's covered all six nights (including one at another plantation restaurant). Figuring that the cost of three additional dinners and the taxi fares to get there would run several hundred dollars, we decided that Montpelier was a little too expensive for us. We figured that on our next trip to Nevis, we'll stay at Montpelier if we're in a better financial position.

There's no question that Montpelier and Nisbet are two of the nicest plantation inns on Nevis.

I have sent clients to both resorts and definitely no complaints.

Wow! Since the obvious difference (beachfront vs. up on the mountain) is not an issue it's going to be hard for others to decide what is right for you. Both places offer great service and comfortable rooms. As far as views go, I prefer the views from Montpelier - they are varied, stunning and perhaps a bit more diverse than the ones at Nisbet - not to imply that view at Nisbet is bad - far from it.

The food at both places is very good but IMO Montpelier has the edge. Quite honestly, there are some other very nice restaurants on the island (both casual and upscale) so I would not recommend dining soley at either resort. You'll do yourself a dis-service if you don't "dine around".

You will be equally pleased at either place.

I love the beach at Nisbet and it is a great property. However, if price is not an issue and beach is not an issue, I would chose Montpelier. I really like both properties, but I have always found the service at Montpelier and the food better. Hope you have a wondeful trip! :)

My wife and I just returned from our stay on Nevis. We had the exact issue you raise. We decided to stay for two weeks and split our time between the two inns. We enjoyed both immensely.

I would rate Montpelier a notch above Nisbet, based on the food, service and general ambience. I enjoy some peace and quiet and Montpelier has those two in abundance. The food was excellent and our room, #14, had a wonderful view.

I second Sunnyboy's suggestion to dine around. We ate at Le Bistro, Double Deuce, Gallipot, etc. and never had a bad meal. Go to the Golden Rock Beach restaurant for a lobster sandwich. Yum!

Now, don't get me wrong, we loved Nisbet, but if we had to choose, Montpelier is the one we would go back to.

my husband and i are considering nevis in the spring,love the sound of the plantation inns, torn between the two listed, nisbet or montpelier, which has the nicer pool? and how is the beach {a short ride away} at montpelier?

The pools at both resorts are fine but truth be told they are just pools. Unless you are staying at a mega-resort you'll find pools at the smaller Carribean resorts are not major draws. Most visitors to the Caribbean don't spend much time around the pools.

Montpelier's "private beach" is about a 15 minute drive from the Inn. It's in a park like setting on the Caribbean side of the island near Nelson's Springs, about 3/4 mile north of the Four Seasons Resort. There are a number of small gazebo like structures (sized perfect for couples) with lounge chairs that are on a grassy knoll just steps from the beacch. There's a small building where the resorts has drinks and food (in Season) available. You can walk north along the beach about 1 mile or so up to Cades Bay. There's a rocky bluff to the south that is passible at low tide (you will get your feet wet) that leads past the Four seasons and Pinney's Beach.

The Montpelier Private beach is on the Caribbean (calmer) side of the island. The sea, as with anything dealing with mother nature, there is generally calm but on occasion it can get "wavy" if the Christmas winds are blowing or if there are swells relating to storm activity. There are very good views of St. Kitts from the beach. There areas north of Montpelier have an abundance of palm trees and other natural vegetation.

Thanks again for your prompt reply re. the beach listed, is the water clear,not expecting the magnificent turquoise color I saw at Turks and Caicos, but hoping for a shade of blue,we are thinking of going in April.

The water is normally clear (except for when there are the aforementioned swells but because of the darker sand found on Nevis the water will be similar in color to lapis lazulie or steel blue. April is generally a very good time to experience Nevis. The waters should be relatively calm. Note, there's a steeper drop off from the beach than you found in the T&C's. This deeper water adds to the darker hue that you'll see.

Stayed at the 4seasons, but we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary with the most romantic dinner i have ever had at the Montpelier in the MILL..OMG>>>>>unbelievable...
