Montego Bay or Negril?
 

My sister and I are 20-something years old, and don't know which city is more fun. It seems like Mo Bay has more nightlife. Also, how is safety in Jamaica, could we walk or ride a taxi at night to a club/bar? <BR> <BR>Thanks

I would suggest going to Negril over MoBay. It is much safer, a smaller area and much prettier and calmer. There are some great places that have been established there for nightlife, drinks, eats, etc.... MoBay has it fair share of crime and as many times as I have been to Jamaica, Iwould not travel about in MoBay with my sister alone. I just would not feel comfortable. <BR> <BR>You could also look into Ocho Rios. The Hard Rock is there and the Renassiance Jamaica Grande is right down the road from town - great disco on there resort too.

Twenty-somethings invariably prefer Negril over MoBay == just don't book for Spring Break or when MTV/Jerry Springer do their shtick there. You'll essentially live at the beach, with nightlife/club access easy. Use your street smarts in Jamaica but there's no reason for paranoia. Unless you're staying on the cliffs, you'll be able to walk anywhere. Try CountryCountry right on the beach,Rockhouse,Xtabi,Blue Cove Castle on the West End Cliffs for relativelyl inexpensive lodging. MoBay's a city/urbane, Negril is totally a resort town.

Negril is tops in my book. We split our vacation in May 2000 half between the beach (Whistling Bird) and the cliffs (Rockhouse). We previously had stayed at Charela Inn, and we'll go back there again because their restaurant is so terrific. Take a daytrip that combines Black River Safari and YS Falls. Really fun.

I would recommend Negril over MoBay. Negril is more of a beach area. MoBay appeared to have its Beach Resorts nestled within the city. I did not stay in MoBay so I cannot comment on the safety. I stayed in Negril. I felt safe in the afternoon and for the most part safe in the evening (I was travelling with 5 other girls). I did go during spring break, fortunately MTV was not there during my week. I found some good nightlife at Risky Business, Margaurittaville, and De Bus. I don't know how the nightlife will be during a non-spring break week. There are really no indoor NYC style clubs, but the beach clubs are just as much fun!! AS for walking, it depends on location. I would not walk along the cliff side road at night (it seemed pretty desolate) but I would walk along the beach with friends at night. As for Taxi's, they are easy to find (everyone is a taxi driver) and cheap! My best advise is to stay on the beach side of Negril. I had a blast!

Negril any day over MoBay. I have stayed at both and much perfer Negril. I never felt safe off the resort in MoBay and never felt un safe in Negril. Negril was an artist area and has a nice mix. You can rent a scooter or cab to take you any were. There are several Night spots that are a cab ride away. MoBay is more of a city and has lots of crime.

I agree, Negril. More options for hotels, more restaurants, more nightlife, easy to get around on fot or by taxi. <BR><BR>There is an indoor disco now, actually two - the new one is the Jungle, across from the beach around Fun Holiday restaurant, and Compulseon has always been there, in town I think.<BR><BR>:) Liz

me too, i second Negril . it has a long stretch beach, less crowded and still have plenty of night life. Mobay is too commercialized and the only famous beach there which everyone goes to is Dr. Cove's I believe.
