I don't know that it is actually unsafe, but Jamaica generally speaking is not the friendliest or most open-minded place for same sex couples to travel. That part of what you heard is certainly true.

Jamaicans generally don't care anymore, really. Many Jamaicans are still anti LGBT but so are many people right across the world. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion on the matter. The hype about it being unsafe for same sex couples in Jamaica (unsafe, meaning you will be beaten or killed) is spread mainly by the gay lobby groups in the USA and elsewhere as a means of applying pressure on the country to repeal certain laws. Usually when you hear of a homosexual being killed viciously it is usually another homosexual lover who has done the deed due to some relationship gone wrong.

The acts of buggery and sodomy are still illegal in Jamaica though. So if you do visit the island you should know that and act accordingly.
