Martinique?

Anyone been to Martiniqe recently? Any comments? How does it compare to St. John, St. Bart, or St. Kitts? Thanks!

Martinique is a Department of France, and the French culture is very evident on the island. The predominant language is therefore French - don't count on English being spoken (unlike St. Barts, where most people you encounter can speak at least some English). If you speak some French, you will enjoy the vacation much more - at least bring a phrasebook with you. Don't expect to find any American stores or restaurant chains - it is totally French & European. 90% of its tourists come from France or Canada, Americans are few and far between. The island has an excellent road system, and some really fine restaurants. Hotels are only in the 2/3 star range - there are no ultra luxurious resorts anywhere. The northern part of the island is rainforest and is beautiful. The southern part is sunny and drier, and has the best beaches. If you want a French atmosphere but don't speak French, then consider St. Barts instead. St. Barts overall has less natural beauty but better beaches, friendly people, outstanding food, and is very safe. However, it is also one of the most expensive islands in the Carib, much more costly than Martinique.

Martinique is a large island - it takes 2 hr to go by car from top to bottom. There are a few good beaches, medium hotels, restaurants. SJ and SB are more touristy. What are you looking for?

I'm looking for an island with more to do than drink on the beach. I'd love great snorkeling, beautiful beaches, a place we can explore on our own safely, not too touristy or crowded, and not too expensive. Am I dreaming? Thanks for the Martinique info. Seems not many Americans go to Martinique. I'm not sure if that is good (ie not too touristy) or there's a reason it does not attract Americans. The language doesn't bother me. We lived in French speaking Switzerland for a year so I think we could get by. I'm wondering about accomodations and safety. Thanks for any help!

I was there last year and it doesn't really compare to the other islands you mentioned. Nowhere as nice.

I was there two years ago and stayed at Sofitel Bakoua - simply beautiful ! The island truly reflects the European/French pace. Not everyhing went perfectly well, but it's actually this that makes your trip memorable. Food is fabulous everywhere on the island. And do take a catamaran trip to the less explored parts of the island. You'll find almost deserted beaches with a couple of scattered houses on the shore and clear blue waters. <BR>

Reading the answers, I understand that no one seems to know about the hotel CAP EST LAGOON RESORT, a real 5-star hotel, just opened in Martinique. I stayed there last week and must admit that it's not only a georgous venue but also an hotel where the staff is very charming and nearly as professional as in Asia. The food, as well, is excellent (1 star Michelin guide standart) and not very expensive.
This hotel was the one missing in Martinique and I wonder why it's not registered in the FODORS list.

Had one day there in port last month and was amazed by how lush and beautiful it is. Has a rain forest too. Fort de France was Ok but no where near as nice as Aruba or St. Thomas.

Message for Laurent: that's nice to hear some feed-back about this new hotel.
Can you please give more details ?
