Majestic Elegance, Punta Cana via Costco

We booked our vacation through Costco Travel which we would definitely recommend. They took care of everything. We stayed at the Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana from January 27 thru Feb 3, 09. We went with an open mind knowing it recently opened (nov 08). Everything was wonderful, the rooms (basic junior suites) were spacious and clean, showers had multiple jets, food & drinks were plentiful, the beach, shows were available in the evening, the (small) casino was good - I won $340 the first day!

The one outstanding feature was the friendliness of everyone on their staff, from the gardeners, to the hostess, to the bartenders etc. We did go through probably a little less than $100 for $1 tips here & there. But they were congenial even if a tip was not offered. Roberto, Alexandro, & Angela were outstanding at the upstairs bar. I wish I could remember more names.

Now for the downside, only minor though. It became a running joke trying to get a washcloth - we never had one all week (I used a handtowel). At first I left a note along with $1 for the maid requesting one, until I realized that they were unable to read English. Even speaking to them was not successful. The other minor downside was the fact that butter was not available - their little packets tasted like yellow crisco. And they had so many wonderful cuban bread varieties.

I would recommend this resort to anyone - all-inclusive & would like to go back again someday.

I was happy to read your favorable review, as we are staying at the Majestic Elegance in a couple of weeks, also through Costco. Was there a strict dresscode for the restaurants, and how was the food? Also, what about worthwhile day excursions? Were mosquitoes a problem at that resort? Thanks for any tips or information you can pass along!
