Maho Bay - which tent?
 

Looks like I'm finally headed to Maho, after first reading about it 15 years ago! Plans are for the 1st week in May. My question: Which tent cottage should I ask for: I'm going solo, would like some privacy, a breeze and fabulous view. (Like everyone, I know!) Anybody have a suggestion for me? Thanks!

I think we have the map at home; I'll look on Monday (I'm going away for the weekend). We stayed in the studios so I don't know the numbers off hand. It really depends what you want to be close to -- the showers, the restaurant/store, the beach. I suspect the higher you are up, the better the breeze, but the longer you have to go down to AND UP from the beach!

It's been like 15 years since I was there...but I do remember: the higher up the hill, the better the views, the better the breeze, and just think how great your leg muscles will look after all those steps! Oh and don't forget the DEET! (and long pants and long sleeve shirt for sleeping - because the noseeums can get through the floorboards). Also leave your beach towel outside the tent so the buggers can't hitch a ride inside. I still remember that view...aaaahhh...you'll see the lights of St. Thomas twinkling as you fall asleep. Thanks again - I keep wondering why this place is so great if it's so buggy. Is it really that buggy? Or do the pros of the place outweigh the bug issue? I'm not a wimp, and I'm not afraid of critters, but I don't relish being up all night swatting mosquitoes, or being eaten alive! Any other thoughts on this??

We haven't been there for 6 or so years, but it's definitely worth it, despite the bugs!

Cooncat, the E tent-cottages are the furthest up the mountain and therefore the coolest. I know, from our experience last month, that E28 is as far as you can get from EVERYTHING so if you want seclusion, that's the way to go. However, this one does not have a clear view of anything... feels like a tree house. I wish I could help you with the exact location but I don't have a map, either. Just know that if you request or are assigned an E location, you are going to have fantastic legs when you get home!

The bugs are killer. I wish I had worn long pants all the time, especially at night. About 4 nights into our stay, I almost packed up and headed for the Westin... I kid you not. The bugs were eating me alive. Luckily, they left our toddler alone and only the adults were bitten. But it was bad. Do you all you can to protect yourself - deet, clothing, shaking everything out before bringing it inside, etc. I think that if you prepare, you'll be fine.

I'm sorry I never posted about the location. I couldn't find the map. I could swear I kept it... Anyway, the studios are NOT luxurious in the typical sense, but do give you lights, a fridge, and a connected bathroom! The only thing is that they are the highest up the hill, thus a longer and more buggy walk to all! Bugs were an issue, but wWe found that as long as we wore pants in the evening, and used deet, we were fine. The worst bug experience we had was watching the pelicans and the sun set at St. Francis Bay (just next to Maho). Despite our deet, we didn't have pants with us, we were quite bugged!

We were there in November, maybe it is not as buggy then.
