Low-mid cost apartments: Caribbean or Central America?

Hi All -
My girlfriend and I (mid twenties) are working on booking a trip for late June. We're looking for a low-key beach vacation, probably either Caribbean or Central America. We aren't opposed to the all-inclusive route (mostly what we've done before), but are curious about the apartment option. For comparison, right now we are very interested in the Mongoose Apartments (www.mongooseapartments.com), but are hoping to find a similar option in a place that might be easier (cheaper) to get to - perhaps jamaica, parts of mexico, or the Dominican.

Priorities are:
1)On beach or within easy walking distance
2)Close to necessary amenities (ie grocery if we're to do our own cooking)
3) Reasonable rates (~ <160 US per night)
4)Clean and safe
5)Pool is nice but not required

Thanks in advance for your advice and help!

Well, I don't have any personal experience (yet) with it, but Dawn's Creole Cottage on Bequia in the Grenadines more than fits your budget and most of what you hope to find. It's about $45-60/night, is within a very short walk to the beach, and there's a comissary/small grocery store near by. You could stock up at the larger one when you first arrive and then go the one within walking distance for other items. It comes recommended by at least one poster here and in some budget guidebooks. It's definitely clean & safe.

However, Bequia is a bit difficult to do and could well be more expensive than flying to Beef Island (that's the Mongoose place you're talking about, right?).

You don't say where you are traveling from. So it's difficult to recommend a place that is easier/cheaper to get to for you. If you can fly non-stop to San Juan the puddle-jumper to Tortola is an easy flight (we did it with a 1-year-old) but it may not be cheap.

However, if you do go with the Mongoose Apartments, I can say that Cane Garden Bay is low-key, until the cruise ships come in. On certain days it is overrun with lots of day-trippers.

One option for you might be Akumal, Mexico. Cancun is usually easy/cheap to get to from most big cities in the US, and Akumal is 1-2 hours south (depends on time of day and construction). There are lots of condos for rent, many with pools. Some are on a rocky stretch of shoreline (great snorkeling!) but within walking distance to a gorgeous beach, so be sure to ask. In late June many will be in your price range. Check out locogringo.com. Also, Mexico has many more "excursions" available than Tortola, IMHO. So if you have a rainy day you can go see a great mayan ruin, or go shopping in Playa del Carmen.

Sorry for the incomplete info. We're in Peoria, IL, so we can travel relatively easily from Chicago or St. Louis.

I've looked at a few private condos in Akumal, and there some appealing options. We haven't ruled that out, but since both of us have been to Cancun, Riviera Maya, and Cozumel, we were thinking we'd try something new.

Thanks for your advice!

Forgot to mention that you can ask on traveltalkonline.com for info on cruise ship schedules for Tortola.
